  Is it possible to insert a slideshow of photographs into the header of my Pilcrow themed home page? If so, can you tell me how please?

  Your current theme doesn’t support this. However, you can set your header to ‘Random’ to randomly show a different header on each page refresh: https://doingjusticenews.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-header

  There are some other themes that have post sliders to show featured images linked to certain posts: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/

  Alternatively you can create a static front page with an embedded slideshow:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/
