Slideshows, Text Only

Can I create slideshows with text only? For instance, instead of four images, each ‘image’ would be replaced by a category (like ‘Local News’, ‘State News’, ‘National News’ etc.) with each category containing links to different headlines pertaining to that cat. I’m trying to create a daily news feed.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!
That is a really interesting question!
It appears that in a slideshow format embedding links to places other than the URL of where the picture is located does not work. I attempted to embed links in the captions and cannot get it work. I would say that slideshows are for pictures only.

I understand you want to make a daily news feed. One way of doing that is using the WordPress feed automattically set-up.

http://utahdailynewsresources.wordpress.com/feed will give you the RSS Feed for your blog.

You could add an RSS widget on the sidebar of your front-page to let users know what the new news is of your blog.

The problem with RRS is that I want to pick and choose from multiple sources what to post into multiple categories. The only solution I can think of is copy/paste from MSWord. Any thoughts?

If by multiple sources you mean RSS feeds from Posts, Comments, Authors, Tags, or Categories than WordPress allows for that. You could create an RSS feed of just specific tags or categories.

    RSS Feed for your Posts
    http://utahdailynewsresources.wordpress.com/feed/

    RSS Feed for your comments:
    http://utahdailynewsresources.wordpress.com/comments/feed/

You can also have an RSS feed for your tags, authors, and categories:

Just replace en.blog.wordpress.com with your own domain.
Category: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/category/features/feed/ (“Features” is the category.)
Tag: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/tag/themes/feed/ (“Themes” is the tag.)
Authors: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/author/matt/feed/ (“matt” is the username of the author.)

Also, please take not that copying/paste from MS Word will create random characters when you paste it into WordPress. These characters may impact your WordPress display and require lots of editing. It is best that you use a text editor to copy/paste from.

WOW! Thanks. This has been a learning experience. I used to sell IBM’s Interleaf Publisher for newspapers 25 yrs ago. I don’t remember it being this difficult. I’ll be upgrading to a ‘premium’ theme soon. I’ll think I’ll have more options then. Do you work for WordPress? Interested in doing some consulting when I’m ready? Thanks again.

When you upgrade to a premium theme please make sure you follow the premium theme instructions. Different makers of the themes require pictures etc. to be specific lengths, sizes, widths etc. Also each premium theme as their own specific forum (This is a WordPress.COM forum, which is good for generalized information) that addresses questions related to that specific theme.

No I do not work for Automattic (the makers of WordPress) and while I appreciate the consulting offer I must decline. I am a HS History teacher with several years of using WordPress in a classroom setting. I use WordPress mainly for running my classroom. If you have any questions feel free to start a new thread in the forum!

Finally, take note that WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are two different formats. You have (and this forum is for) WordPress.COM questions. The difference between the two can be found here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

My site is a WordPress.ORG site. I like the customization ability and the access to plugins.
