slow blog

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog runs and loads veeerrry slowly.

Any options on how to make it faster? I’ve heard having less pictures helps, but that’s not an option for me–I need graphics in my posts.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

First off, you really need to cut down on the number of posts showing on the main page of your blog. My suggestion is never more than 10 (settings > reading), and I actually prefer 5 personally.

Secondly, W3C XHTML validator is reporting that you have 1174 errors on your main page. With that many errors, the search engines have probably written you off. They will take a certain amount of errors, but that is way over the top.
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpugnaciousirishman.com%2F&charset=(detect+automatically)&doctype=Inline&group=0

You need to go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click “save changes.” Next, start opening each post on your main page in the wordpress editor and making one small change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “update post.” Continue on with the rest of the posts. Hopefully wordpress will automatically correct most of the errors.

Ok, thanks…any idea on how these html errors got in there in the first place?

I’ve never seen such a slow site and the front page is so loooooooooong. For starters, the more tag will help. Do take note of the section “formatting issues.”

Some of them are errors I see quite frequently and are less of an issue, but the ones that are an issue are the missing ending tags for things like “div”, “span” “ul” and “li” and such HTML tags. Those can actually end up breaking your blog.

Sometimes these are introduced if you copy and paste from the web or from programs like MS Word. Those both will insert code that causes problems. There is a “paste from Word” icon on the lower tool bar for pasting from Word, and a “paste as plain text” icon for pasting from the web. That said, sometimes the errors just seem to happen.

The change at settings > writing should help to keep the vast majority of errors from showing up from now on.

One other question: I reduced the number of posts on my front page to 8, but when I load the website, it still puts all my posts on one long page (in other words, you don’t have to click on something like “archive” to see the rest)…the only difference is that after 8 posts, the order switches. Do I need to do something else in order to make it only load 8 pages on one?

All of your posts seem to have been set as sticky posts which is part of what is causing the issue. Any post you see on your blog with a blue background is a “sticky post.”

You are going to have to start editing all of your posts and “unstick” them. You can find information on that here: http://support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/ .

The sticky post feature is designed to allow you to put a post at the top of the main page and have it stay there (like for an announcement or something).

With the exception of the posts on http://pugnaciousirishman.com/page/44/ all of your posts are sticky posts.

What you can do to speed things up is to go to post > edit and then click the little selection square up in the left end of the blue bar at the top of the list, then from the “bulk action” pulldown click “edit” and then click the “apply” button. A window will open and there on the lower right you can set that entire page of posts to “not sticky”. Then click the “update posts” button and move on to the next page list of posts and do the same thing.

    1. Unstick all of your posts as I explained above using the bulk edit feature.

    2. Go through each post as I explained earlier (after the change to settings > writing) https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/slow-blog?replies=8#post-336247

Sorry about posting on another thread…I thought this thread was dead.

Thanks for the help…I’m in process on it all.

My one worry is: I want my posts to go up by the latest first (today’s post up first, followed by yesterday’s, then the day before’s, etc), but I haven’t found a way to do this other than making the posts sticky. Any other way to make them go up like that?

I also apologize about dragging this on…I’m a bit dim. :)

If you just post them, the newest will always be first. Making posts sticky screws that up. Unsticky all of them and they will go in the proper order.

And you can always find your other forum posts by clicking on the word “Member” under your name.

Wait…never mind…everything’s looking good…no need to reply further, I just asked more questions before I finished the task. thanks for the help.
