Slow response time – WP & shopping cart

    My site is set up using WP2.x running on a Linux server at my web hosting company. I have a link from my home page to my secure shopping cart (X-cart – PHP appl) which is also running on the same server (but uses its own MySQL db). I only have a handful of items in my store, but I’m really puzzled about why the store response time is very slow, to the point of timing out now and then. Are integrations of this type generally problematic? Any alternate integration suggestions?
