small avatar failure, theme or gravatar?

    Going through the suggestions for making the blog visible to google, I verified (or was it validated?) the page which checks for html code problems. It came up with code errors for all the small latest comment gravatars, none of which ever work. Only wp avatars work in latest comment list. Does this mean it would be a theme problem rather than a problem with gravatar? I can’t edit the code anyway.
