Smartquotes not automatically happening

    I have read forum questions that span many years about how the smart quotes were not working or not consistently working. I am using a free version (wordpress.com, until I upgrade), and at no time has WordPress automatically applied smart quotes.

    Some of the resolutions, like using escape characters or Perl script, are exceedingly techy. (for example, this thread from 2013) My easiest hack has been to copy/paste my content into MS Word, do a global replace, and then copy/paste back into WordPress.

    So I would like to ask, has this been fixed and there is a setting to apply it that I’m missing?
