Sneaky old domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
Over a year a go i changed my blog from makintracks.wordpress.com to stepsinthyme.com
I changed the author and all the other places where I thought the old name would be, but it keeps sneaking back.

Ive attached two images to show you what i mean. Hoping you can help me change it so that I can get rid of makintracks for good.

    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. The reason you’re still seeing https://makintracks.wordpress.com is because that is your URL on the WordPress platform, i.e. that’s the address where your blog is hosted. When you bought the custom domain http://stepsinthyme.com/ it didn’t replace the WordPress.com URL, but was merely laid over it.

When anyone types the makintracks URL into their browser they’re automatically redirected to stepsinthyme.com instead and anyone who visits your blog, including search engines, will see stepsinthyme.com as the address. The makintracks URL is only visible to you as site admin, and you should only see it on your dashboard, as is the case with the screenshots you provided.

While it is possible to change the WordPress.com URL, I’d advise against it – no one but you can see the makintracks URL, so you can really just ignore it.

Thats what I thought, but then a friend shared one of my posts on her facebook page and it came up as a post from makingtracks. Is that the same?

  • I tested it on my Facebook and it shows the correct URL, so I don’t know why it would show the other one for your friend.

I see you haven’t yet registered stepsinthyme.wordpress.com (DON’T do so now!), so you should be able to change your WordPress.com address to that, as that address had already been reserved for you when you changed your username. Instructions for changing your blog address can be found here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

However, I don’t know what effect that will have on your custom domain, so I’m going to tag this for staff to clarify. I recommend you wait for them or another volunteer who knows to reply before changing the underlying WordPress.com address.

    Hi there,

When I shared your link on Facebook (both makintracks.wordpress.com and stepsinthyme.com) I get this:

    Screen Shot

Can you show me where on Facebook your friend saw https://makintracks.wordpress.com? If he/she could provide you a screenshot and upload it to your Media > Library I’d be more than happy to take a look at it.
