Snow?

Last year, there was an extra that added animated snowflakes on our sites. I loved it. Any chance that we will have that option again this year?

I can’t wait to see it. My blog is just 6 months old, so this will be my first Christmas at WordPress.
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

I think one thing to be careful of is that snow can slow down ppl’s computers, especially if your blog front page contains a dozen posts or so. Last year I stopped visiting blogs regularly that had snow on them.

And last year, wp made the snow “feature” optional. The first year, people were not able to turn it off.
People either really love it or really hate it. I am definitely in the latter camp. -
I have to say I’m not fond of it either and avoid blogs that use it. The first year it was a heavy CPU load, but the second year it was better, but it is a cumulative thing and the longer you are on a site with snow, the more CPU power it takes.

Anti-Snowites. ;)
I like the snow. I like looking at it. And, if no one shows up at my site to watch the snow with me, then fine ;)

I’m into having a clean site that loads quickly, so that puts me in the “no snow” camp. Page loading time matters and is expected to become a page ranking factor in 2010. Thank goodness this is now an optional feature.

As far as I know, staff has not said yes or no about the snow.
Past performance is not (always) a prediction of future events—especially those which we have no control over.
If it is offered, I hope that year 3 will mean that it’s an “opt-in” choice rather than us having to do something to turn it off.

Hopefully this will help those who prefer a snowless environment.

Thanks for the heads up on the probability of the snow slowing down loading of pages. I’m still excited to try the virtual snow for at least for a day. I’m thinking that predicting a snowy day on my blog and letting my friends know via Facebook will bring in some visitors!

@electricia1-The snow script they used two years ago was a killer and there was no way to opt out. Last year’s script was “lighter” on CPU resources, but we also had a way to opt out (if you knew about it). Who knows what/if will happen this year.
Don’t forget that if your blog is mostly white or light colored, the snow effect is somewhat lost.
@tt-welcome!
