So I'm used to using WordPress on my own server and now things are different.

I used to setup wordpress installations on my own server, but now that I’m using WordPress’ hosting, I find I can’t do things like install themes that aren’t available within wordpress itself, install plugins, upload logos, and update my favicon. Maybe I can do this stuff, but I don’t see the same options I used to have. I would appreciate any guidance I could get.

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you aware that there are two separate and distinct flavors of WordPress?
    .com
    .org
    and the differences are significant:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Well now I am. Thank you! I’ve already spent my money on .com. :( Thank you for this info.

If you purchased the domain mapping within the past 48 hours, and it was not what you meant to do, it might be possible for you to get a refund. I’m a volunteer so can’t say for certain, but you should contact Support.

They are closed over the weekend, but the link is this:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

Or you could try to email them:
    support@wordpress.com

I’ll also modlook this thread so perhaps a staff person will notice…

Thank you so much! I’ve put so much work into building the blog already that I’d hate to have to start over. I think I’ll just work with the limitations for now and worry about switching later on.

Well that’s up to you. If you decide in future to self-host there are options:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
    and
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

I have only experienced the export / import between wp.com blogs, but that is really easy to do. One day, perhaps, I’ll try the .org possibility, just not yet…

The .ORG to .ORG works the same.

The only glitch I have seen is if you are moving from an old .ORG (way earlier software version) to a new latest .ORG software there can be an issue if the database had changes in the internal structure between the old software and the new version. But if you decide to move from .COM to .ORG should be a non issue as things are always latest software version here and a new .ORG install should also have the latest .ORg version.
