So my draft post is gone then?
-
Was writing a post when WP had its big problems this afternoon. Ended up writing about 800 words while it kept giving me its standard autosave messages throughout. When I tried to publish, I started getting the big ‘404’ messages. For the next 2-3 hours, I sporadically tried to publish it, with no success. I went back to my dashboard, because I was under the impression that my post was saved in ‘drafts’ and I could just publish it when WP was fixed.
I went out to do some errands and when I came back home, WP was back up, so I went back to the drafts to publish my post. Imagine my irritation when the saved draft only had about the first 70 words (again, out of roughly 800). I went to look for revisions so that I could try to find a complete or near-complete version of the post, but apparently due to me being unable to publish the post, there is no revisions box.
Is this for real, WP? Can I expect this to happen every time I have the misfortune to be writing during a ‘maintenance hiccup’? If so, why should I bother even writing a blog? I’ve had a blog with WP for about 2 years. This is my second blog that I began as a motivational weight loss blog for friends and family. And now half my afternoon has been wasted. With all the servers and data centers at WP, this blows my mind.
So could someone tell me if what I wrote this afternoon is retrievable? Again, there are (for some reason) no revisions for me to fall back on. I’m pretty irate over this and seriously dumbfounded. I CAN’T imagine that every time something like this happens, whoever happens to be writing at the time gets totally screwed. HOW DO I FIX THIS???

The safe way to create and publish posts is by using an offline blog editor. windows live writer is free and it’s for PCs of course. Ecto is modestly priced at $20.
If you posts cannot be found in your drafts then it’s gone. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/21/wordpress-recovering-a-lost-blog-post-or-page/

I’ve lost a couple of drafts during my six or seven years on WordPress, so I understand the panic you’re feeling. I also think, like I did the first time, you’ve lost a little perspective here. You’ve been using WordPress for two years, and this is the first time you’ve lost something… no system is perfect, but WP is still way better than the alternatives.
No offence intended, but you lost 800 words. I’m sure you can remember some of them, or start over. Just breathe a little, there’s no point in giving up the work you’ve already put into your blogs, especially since you’re using them to help other people.
If you’re worried about future losses… something I did for awhile after I lost my first post was use Notebook, or a simple text editor, to copy and paste my work into.

Take Timethief’s suggestion and look into blog clients. They are probably the best way to go to make sure you don’t lose anything in the future (unless of course your computer takes a dump or crashes – it happens too).
As Feartheseeds says, if you have went 2 years without losing anything that is actually a good sign. When was the last time you went two years without having to restart your computer after some sort of hiccup or your internet connection went dead in the middle of something?
Anytime you are working and saving things over the internet (working without a net) there is a chance of losing something.

I use Windows Live Writer now and find it much easier than online Posting and as an added bonus WLW has built in Table generation. Using Tables makes many of my Posts much easier to do. I have several Posts upcoming that will use tables, having built in tables will save me a lot of work.
