So Upset – host server has shut my site down?!

  • Unknown's avatar

Can anyone help me at all out there?
My website http://www.essentialcyprus.com (a wordpress designed and maintained website – owned and registered in my name) was being hosted by old employer on his servers. He was quite happy to continue hosting the site when I stopped working for him (he handed the website over to me which was very kind of him). However, I noticed that the two email addresses also hosted were not receiving email as the server is rejecting the logins.
I also cannot go onto the site and get a 404 error.
Believe me I have tried to contact him (he lives abroad and I am in UK) via various email addresses to no avail at all.
I can only assume that he has stopped hosting the whole thing.
So, what I am trying to find out is if I can get the site back and get it hosted again? The domain runs out in December and I aimed to renew it and continue the site. Its currently hosted by http://tucowsdomains.com on WhoIs information so do I just contact them directly?
I really just wanted to gain some clarity on how I should approach things, although as far as I know there is no anamosity involved as there is no reason why there should be!
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thank You

I’m sorry to report that you have accidentally posted to the wrong support forum. This forum is only for bloggers with blogs being free hosted by WordPress.com and we cannot help you here at WordPress.com as we run on different software. This is the correct forum for your software http://wordpress.ORG/support/

thanks timethief, realised that quite quickly – the only thing I have never really understood about WordPress – my website has a .com address and therefore brain engages before thinking! Cheers.

however, on going to the .org support site, it tells me that they have reset all passwords in June so I cannot login with my old details, and as my email addresses are also not working I cannot receive an email from wordpress with a password reset request either – I have no idea where to go from here!

really appreciate your help thank you timethief – for the time being I have set a new profile on .org support and will post same on there.

I’m sorry I cannot help your resolve this. Hopefully the folks at http://wordpress.org/support/ will be able to help you sort this out.

Set up a temporary gmail email account and then create a new username and password over at wordpress.ORG.

One other thing I’ll add, is that if the hosting account is shut down, there is nothing the wordpress.ORG support people can do about it. At that point it is between the account owner, the web host and you.

Thanks all – I have now managed to touch base with the person concerned who, due to health issues, has stopped all his web work. Seems that possibly my website was not remembered when he sold everything off! Its hosted by media temple so he is going to enquire to see what has happened to my website, so am crossing my fingers that I can get it back and host it myself!
    Thanks for all your help.

If the database was not deleted for your wordpress installation, that would at least get you all of your data and you could then import it into the MySQL database for a new installation.
