  You are not required to purchase a domain despite the aggressive advertising and it’s placement that causes confusion.

  To be clear this is a free blog that’s being free hosted by WordPress.com http://candelablog.wordpress.com/ Those who wish to can purchase upgrades but you are not required to purchase an upgrade of any kind to blog here.

  On the signup form at the Blog Address field, select the .wordpress.com domain option from the drop-down menu to the right.

  The other options are registered domain names, so they do cost extra.
