Social Followers
-
Hi, I was wondering what the difference was between social followers and regular followers. Do I really have 66 followers on my blog? Or are those numbers just taken from my other social media accounts? I’m not really sure how this process works. Thank you!
The site I need help with is stheword.wordpress.com.

Hi there,
Social followers are followers from a Facebook page, Twitter, LinkedIn or Tumblr account connected to your site via the Publicize feature, yes, and this counts towards the total follower count for your site.
If you look at the follower counts listed at https://wordpress.com/stats/insights/stheword.wordpress.com, WordPress.com followers refer to people who followed you via a WordPress.com username account. They’ll see new posts you publish in their personal feed in the Reader, and can optionally also receive notifications by email if they choose to. You currently have 4 of those.
Email followers are people who subscribed to your site via email only, without having a WordPress.com account. They receive notification of new posts by email, but they don’t have a WordPress.com account, so don’t have access to the Reader. You currently have 6 of these.
You can see the usernames of your WordPress.com followers, and the email addresses of your email followers, under the respective tabs under Users ->All Users in the dashboard.
Then you currently have 58 followers via your connected Twitter account. When you use Publicize to auto-share a new post to Twitter, the people who follow you there will see it.

Hi,
Thank you for your response! What’s weird is that I received a couple of email followers from people who already follow me on Twitter, so I don’t understand how they’d be categorized as email followers rather than social followers.

Hi there,
What’s weird is that I received a couple of email followers from people who already follow me on Twitter, so I don’t understand how they’d be categorized as email followers rather than social followers.
Someone who already follows you on Twitter can also follow you via email. In that case, they’ll be considered two separate followers as we can’t check if your email follower is already following you via another social channel. This is expected behavior.
Hope that helps.

So how would a social follower follow my site then? Are my Twitter followers automatically counted as followers of my site? Or do they follow my site in a different way than email followers?

So how would a social follower follow my site then?
If someone is following you on Twitter, and you have set up Publicize to automatically share your blog posts to Twitter, they are already following you (and your blog) that way in the sense that they can see the tweet when you publish a post and automatically share it to Twitter. The same goes for other social networking sites.
But if that someone prefers to be notified specifically via email every time you publish then they can do that on your site. Then, your overall follower count will be bumped up by one after they subscribe to your site via email.
Are my Twitter followers automatically counted as followers of my site?
The total number of followers include – 1. All WordPress.com followers, 2. All email followers, 3. All followers from the connected social media accounts.
Hope that clarifies things.
