Social Links Icons And Genericons For Automattic Services On Edin

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would like to recommend/request that Social Links Icons And Genericons be made for most or all Automattic Services (like Gravatar, Polldaddy, Akismet, et cetera) for the Edin theme and any other themes/et cetera that lack Social Links Icons and Genericons for any of those services.

Since there is no Social Links Icon or Genericon for Gravatar on the Edin theme (or probably any other theme/et cetera) at this time, I am using the letter G to represent Gravatar at this time in my Social Links Menu for the Edin theme (Screenshot), but it would be a good idea in my opinion if Social Links Icons and Genericons would be/were made for Automattic services (like Gravatar/et cetera since Automattic owns WordPress and many other services, and most WordPress.com users have Gravatar Profiles) and other somewhat commonly used online services that do not have any at this time.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

Somehow the in-text links that I made for this topic got messed up, and the one that I made for Genericons took over a large amount of text erasing the other in-text links it seems; I am not sure how that happened, maybe when I used the Check Spelling Option, but I did not create this topic to look like this and so it is ruined but at least you can still read what I typed.

  • Hi John, thank you very much for your suggestion to add an icon for Gravatar to Genericons.

Right now there isn’t a plan to add icons for additional services to Genericons. You can read why here:

    https://github.com/Automattic/Genericons/issues/54

I do appreciate your suggestion, though, and you are welcome to share your thoughts over at Github where suggestions for Genericons are tracked.

    Hello Kathrynwp,

You are welcome, and thank you for the link. :)

I can understand there being a limit but why would they not at least add Genericons for Automattic services (especially one like Gravatar) since/because this is an Automattic project I thought (but I could be wrong)? (It just seems strange to me :D )

Are there any plans for WordPress and/or WordPress.com theme creators and/or Automattic/whoever to add their own icons for Gravatar (and other Automattic services) and other online services missing icons for themes like Edin and other themes (past/present/future themes, like Twenty Fifteen)?

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

I’m not actually sure why the decision was made not to include a Gravatar icon. I do see an icon for Polldaddy: http://genericons.com/#polldaddy

While Genericons is a project maintained by Automattic, it was created for everyone to use, not just Automattic. :-)

What I’ve heard about is that icons may be shifting to a different technology in future iterations, away from icon fonts, to different technologies that make it easier to “fork” the base set of icons. You can read more from Genericons designer Joen here about what the future may hold:

Thanks again for your thoughtful questions, they are always appreciated.

    Hello Kathrynwp,

You are welcome, and thank you for the extra information :) ; but I have one more question. :D

Are there any plans to use one or more of the already created Genericons (like the Share Genericon and/or other generic Genericons like that) in situations when we add a link to a service that has no Genericon (like Gravatar)?

That way they will at least have something to represent them instead of nothing. ;)

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

  • In most themes, the “generic” sharing Genericon is used as a fallback icon, and it appears when a more specific one is not available. It’s the one that looks like this:

Yeah that is the one that I was talking about ;) , but it did not show up for the Edin theme though; are there any plans on adding that for this theme and other themes that lack this?

I just tested this in Edin and I see what you mean. I’ll ask our developers to have a look at this.

    Thank you Kathrynwp. :)

I wish that they would ask for feedback (polls, general feedback of what people want and do not want, et cetera) from us users here at WordPress.com (through the WordPress.com News Blog and/or Dashboard and/or wherever) and on other Automattic services before starting certain projects/changes/et cetera (I know that you can not do this with everything, but this could be done for some things) so that we can help give the developers ideas/et cetera, because often that would help the development process to avoid certain problems/et cetera and to help them narrow their focus on what most people want and that would save the developer time and effort/et cetera, and that would help make those projects/changes/et cetera better for a larger amount of people in my opinion; and I think that it would be better for the community, and that it would encourage more people. ;)

Anyway, I am asking so many questions that I feel a bit like a journalist :D , thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and for continuing to help me with this small issue Kathrynwp. :)
