Social Media Icons Hemingway Rewritten

I can only get the addresses of FB/ Inst/ Twitter etc displayed and not the actual icons on my site. Is there something I am doing wrong? I am using Hemingway Rewritten.. Any suggestions welcome. Cheers Vincent

  • Hi there,

When you add those links to your sidebar they are not converted into icons automatically. However, you can use the Social Icons block in your sidebar to set up social icons like you describe.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to do it.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/CzSO7z

    Hope this helps!

    Hi there Jerry

    Thanks for responding so quickly.

It almost worked and I can see how to do it but…

On your demonstration when you click the Social Icons Folder it comes up with

a title “Follow Me” etc and various other things including “add an icon”

When I do it I just get a blank box that I can’t click in.

    Cheers Vincent

  • Hi there,

Is it possible to send a screenshot of what you see? You can add the screenshot to your media library and we’ll be able to access it from there.

I am unable to replicate the issue you are describing on my end. To eliminate it being a potential cache issue, have you tried logging in using a different browser or clearing your browser’s cache?

    Hi there

I have cleared my caches and it was the same so I have added a screenshot to my media library

    Cheers

  • Ah it looks like I was using a different block from the one you added. You can see in the video here I search for “icons” and there are two choices presented

I chose the one on the right, looks like you may have chosen the other one. You can see which I am picking here in this video: https://d.pr/v/ZdQlWY

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Jerry

I have been clicking on the right one but I think it has something to do with the fact I downloaded Classic widgets file because that was what I thought I had to do to see the icons. And now I can’t delete that Classic widgets file to use the social icons one.

    I have taken a screen shot…

    Cheers Vincent

  • Hello Vincent,

When you mention a Classic Widgets file – what have you downloaded exactly? Are you referring to the Classic Widget plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-widgets/

Screenshots can be shared https://snipboard.io/ :)

    Many thanks.

    Hi Ale

    Yes I do….

It sits in my Googledrive bin at the moment…

    VIncent

  • Hello Vincent,

In order to install that plugin, the site would need to be on the business plan, so this wouldn’t really apply.

Are you able to confirm if you’re selecting the correct social icons?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Al

The “Legacy Widget” plugin never worked.
And it said it wouldn’t work.
But it does just sit there.

    RE the correct icons.

If you look you can see I have the FB/Inst etc addresses there and if you click on them they will take you to the right places…

    Vincent

  • Hello Vincent,

Ok, so it looks like these have been added using a paragraph block.

This would need to be replaced with a social icons block as seen here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/social-links-block/

    I hope this helps.

    Okey Dokey,

So I have deleted all blocks and pages and menus etc so all I have is a one menu page to add widgets and yet…

It still won’t let me. All I get is the Social Media block but I can’t put anything inside it because it is expecting Legacy Widgets which are still listed as the default option.

I can put the social media addresses (like before) but without icons.I have deleted them from my computer but there doesn’t appear to be a way I can in WordPress.

    Any thoughts?

Do you think it has anything to do with me using a Chromebook cos I know that can cause issues with other programs sometimes.

    All the best Vincent

  • Hello Vincent,

Hmm, that sounds odd – using a Chromebook wouldn’t make any difference in this instance.

Can you tell me step by step (or click by click) what you’re doing so that we can see if there’s any gaps along the way please.

    Many thanks.

    I click on Appearance
    Then Widgets
This takes me to the Widget menu
    I click on sidebar
    Then the blue block sign
    I type in “icons”
I click on the Image on the right
It comes up with a block labelled “Social Icons”
But It is just an empty block with that heading.
I can’t click in it to change it in anyway
There are 3 little boxes above which I can click in
The 3 little dots give me the option of “show more settings”
When I do it shows “Legacy Widget” option with the Social Icons image next to it
Above the Social Icons one which I presume is the one I should be using
I am unable to delete or move either of them
I have uploaded screenshots to show exactly what I mean

    Cheers

  • Thank you for all the details, Vincent!

I had a look at the screenshots, and I see you have AdBlock active, and there are some ads blocked on the page with the editor. There wouldn’t be any ads, really, so I wonder if some of the images are hidden, as if they were.
I guess it’s worth a try to deactivate the AdBlock temporarily and try again. Does that make any difference?
