Social media plugin for LINE

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there any plan to support the plugin for LINE, the social media/chat platform that is very popular in Japan? For those of us building sites to be used in Japan, one of the reasons for opting out of WordPress.com and going for self-hosting is this omission.

On a positive note, I would like to praise the implementation of Japanese as a base language option for WordPress sites. It works well, as do the admin tools to implement it. Be aware though that the WordPress desktop app (Win 10) has problems with Japanese character font support that make it unusable.

Not that I am aware of but you can request it by clicking this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/ideas#postform and creating a thread in the Ideas Forum. Staff review the suggestions there and if the plugin is implemented they will contact you directly.

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up on your feedback. • Hi @cstarknyc, I don’t see requests along these lines. Do you mean you want to include a link to this service with the social media icons, or are you wanting to embed something? If you’ll send more details I’ll file the request. Thanks!

Can you include more details here?

Re: misrendering of Japanese characters in the desktop app:

    Example:

    • create a page using the browser-based admin tool
    • write a title using kanji, e.g., ようこそ!
    • the link name of this page will be rendered as https:….ようこそ! in the browser tool
    • the slug will be rendered as ようこそ! in the browser tool
    • however, the page URL and slug will be rendered as unicode numbers %e3%82%88%e3%81%86%e3%81%93%e3%81%9d%ef%bc%81 in the desktop app on Win10
    • this makes editing of any Japanese text in titles etc risky using the desktop app
    • Japanese text in the page body appears to be rendered correctly

So, perhaps I was a little sweeping in my comment that the desktop app is unusable for Japanese – but it is a bit risky

  • this makes editing of any Japanese text in titles etc risky using the desktop app

What happens if you do edit the title in the app? Does it appear incorrectly in the browser after that?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes.

What happens is that the kanji/hiragana/katakana characters can be entered correctly into the desktop app (e.g. page edit), but on clicking “update” these characters are reduced to their escaped unicode sequences. But only for some text values, not all.

Checking in the browser admin, and in a browser page view, the characters remain correct.

  • So it continues to work in a browser, it just looks wrong in the URL for the app, right?

  • Unknown's avatar

In the URL, and in the slug.

Perhaps elsewhere but I haven’t done a thorough check.

  • Unknown's avatar

And yes, fails in the app, works fine in the browser

  • Sorry, just to clarify, you have said “this makes editing of any Japanese text in titles etc risky using the desktop app” . The titles still work in the app but the slugs display unicode. But even if you save them, they still work in the browser? Or do they then break in the browser too?

  • Unknown's avatar

They break only in the desktop app, and only in the sense that – on saving a modified slug or page “filename” – the rendered characters revert to being displayed as unicode alphanumeric sequences.

Such uploaded changes are correctly displayed in the web browser admin tool and on the regular viewer page.

In other words, this is a problem of rendering within the desktop app of exotic character sets, but not a problem of upload to the WordPress db of such text sequences

  • OK. Thank you :) I’ll file a bug on this display issue. In the meantime, do know you’re safe to keep using the app.
