social media share counts not showing

I recently changed my theme and bought my domain to drop the wordpress out of my URL.
Now social media share counts don’t appear at the bottom of my posts anymore. Occasionally they will show up on different browsers, occasionally Chrome and Safari will show the little number next to the Facebook/Twitter icon, but not consistently. I also changed the appearance of the icons, I used to use the icon+text but now just using the icon. Does that matter?
New posts (since the change) are showing the counts but all the old counts have disappeared (but are occasionally there).
Is this a bug? I rely on those counts to quickly check my post shares.

It makes absolute sense to me why you’d want those numbers accessible.
I took a look at your site and see the issue to which you refer. Generally, this occurs because of something called caching — similar to the caching of history and actions saved in your browser. While you can clear your browser’s cache, we cannot clear the cache that holds your social networking info. Generally, this takes a week to refresh.
I suspect it’s going to take several more days for the cache to automatically clear, and make your social media shares visible once again. In the meantime, I’ve let our developers know, in case this is a problem outside of the normal caching time.
Will you drop me a line in 3 days time — perhaps checking in on Monday morning — and I’ll continue to follow up as well? If I attain more information, I’ll be in touch ASAP.

I figured it was something like that because as I said, the counts on my old posts will occasionally show up. Just not lately, or consistently.

Hi Erin!
Since you just mapped a new domain to your site, the sharing numbers on your old posts will be reset back to zero.
When someone loads a post on your site, we ping all of the various networks and send them the URL of the post. They, in turn, figure out how many times they’ve seen that URL across their network and return that number. Initially, your URL started with goingtothesea.wordpress.com. Now, since you mapped the domain, the URLs of your posts start with goingtothesea.com. Therefore, the social networks are returning “0” unless the new URL has been shared.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a way for us to pull back the old numbers alongside the new numbers from your new URL. I’m sorry! You should see the sharing numbers climb back up as more people share the posts from the new URLs.
