Social share numbers not accurate
-
-
It’s not just a problem with the facebook button. It’s kinda the same with twitter(at least on my blog). There were already some glitches with the old shares and now it doesn’t show the count anymore even on the new posts.
Facebook and twitter share counts on tumblr are fine. Wondering if its just a wordpress thing.
I’d rather not have share buttons than them showing 0 counts. It just feels odd. -
Yes, it’s a WordPress thing. WP is transitioning from http to https everywhere and so anyone who shared the http link isn’t counted as your site is switched to https.
-
I don’t understand how WordPress gets away with this. How can they just let a problem like this remain unresolved for weeks on end? No Pinterest numbers are showing up, and now 3/4 of my Facebook numbers have disappeared. Why is this allowed to continue to go on? I don’t have a free site, so you’d think I’d get at least SOME service.

And what is the URL of your blog; since your name doesn’t link to it, I suspect it’s not hosted here.

But I’m sure there are a bunch of Happiness Engineers on the case & it’ll all be fine soon. EJ x

Hi there!
I just wanted to clarify a few things here. We have pushed a fix for all of the button styles that we have control of. This is any button style except “Official” as listed in Settings > Sharing.
The issue remains for the Official buttons because Facebook’s algorithm sees http and https as separate things. We’re working on reaching out to them about updating their algorithm so that this can be fixed.
As for @ejaustenjones’s circumstance, unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about this. When you change the domain of your site, you change the links that are used so Facebook can’t relate them anymore. This isn’t the same issue as the rest of this thread and isn’t something we can fix.

Hi Shawna
Thanks for your clarification. Yes, I realise now that this is a different issue from this thread, & that, as a third-party issue, it’s not within Automattic’s remit.
In terms of the algorithm update, would you say that there is any scope for me (potentially hooking up with other bloggers in the same situation) to pursue the update with FB, & if so, can you suggest a specific way to frame the request, & to whom, or via which FB help forum to address it? If not, that’s ok, & I’ll just see where my rudimentary user knowledge takes me!
Thanks again.

Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t have any user-facing support paths. They have support forums, but I’m not sure how much they’re involved or whether they participate in them at all.
Our developers are reaching out, which we think is the best path forward for now. :)
Let me know if you have any more questions!

I had a similar issue when I added a few more options on my pages for what share buttons people could use. When I added the new options, all the counters reset to zero. Are those gone forever or is there a way to get them back?

The blog I need help with is adamradkins.com.

@adamradkins – I just took a look at the information Facebook is handing off regarding your Facebook share counts on that post. You can take a look yourself by plugging in the domain here:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/share-button
All I’m getting is zeros. :( I tried rescraping your site’s content here:
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
But still zeros. Changing the buttons that are displayed should not have affected the share counts. Did you change the URL for that page? Like, changing the parent page or the page’s slug?

Hey Shawna. Any idea what’s the deal with the current twitter count?
It doesn’t show after sharing. -
@wearabout – Can you give me a link to the post? If you’re using the official sharing buttons, you’re going to have the same issue that other users are having with Facebook share counts.

Ah yes, I am using the official buttons. I am going to switch to the other options and check again.
Thanks. -
Thanks for the link! Switching to one of the other button styles should fix this. We’ve reached out to Twitter in the same way about their counting algorithm.
Let me know if switching your button style doesn’t work. :)
