Social Shares
-
I allow the icons for FB, Twitter, Email and Google Plus to appear on each of my posts along with the number of times it has been shared. I’m devastated to check that all the numbers have suddenly just dropped! by 100’s!!! A recent post ‘Just another birth story’ had over 200 shares on FB one day and the next time i checked it had gone down to 67 and now it sits at 133?!?! Is there anyway to check this out and find out what has happened? In my stats – the share number doesn’t ever change.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you made any changes to the URLs for your site or for those specific pages? FB tracks those share numbers via the URL. So if you change the URL, the count changes.
-
Nope nothing at all! Every single one of my posts has been effected, some have gone to 0! Am absolutely gutted!

I’m going to guess that it is a glitch on FB’s end of things. That happens sometimes. I have not heard of any issue on our end that would be causing this.
Can you give me a specific post or page as an example?

yeah sure, the post ‘Just Another Birth Story’ – https://scarlettandme.wordpress.com/2015/04/09/just-another-birth-story/ the FB number dropped by 100 once it reached 200 shares. It was then that I checked the other posts that had been quite popular and noticed these had dropped too – for example https://scarlettandme.wordpress.com/2014/12/14/christmas-giveaway-win-a-tales-from-the-earth-message-bangle/ had 100’s of shares on both twitter and FB and now it is saying 0?!

I’m afraid that I cannot see anything on our end that would have caused that and I’m not hearing any recent reports of other sites having this trouble.
Which indicates to me that it is something on FB’s end of things.
Do remember though, these are just share counts. Even if they do not work, as long as they are actually being shared, the traffic will still be heading to your site.

Ok thanks for looking into it for me. It’s frustrating as it gives a smaller scale to the site for brands that I work with. Do you know or have a support contact at FB I could go to? I can’t see anything on their site.
Thanks

I am afraid I do not.
I would think the brands would want to see actual traffic numbers rather than shares. Since sharing means little in terms of people actually visiting the site. But you never know how marketing people work.

Haha I’m a marketer :) it’s just a quick indication if how popular it is. No worries, thanks again!
