SOE and Site Indexing
-
Hi,
I am on a WordPress free plan and I am having trouble understanding how my site gets indexed in search engines. I believe this is supposed to be automated, however I am not registering in the engines. I have tried adding meta tags via the Settings SOE tab for manual verification but get a – ‘There was a problem savings your changes. Please try again’ error message. Can anyone help?
Thanks MichaelThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

re: search engine discoverability
It can take weeks for search engines to index your site content. Please read this support doc https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/ so you know we have no control over search engines positioning or appearance in the SERPs (search engine page results).
To verify blog ownership of a WordPress.com hosted blog with the major search engines you must use this process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
Note: Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don’t feel panicky about this please.WordPress.com automatically supplies sitemaps for our blogs to search engines – we do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines

Take control of your site and how it appears in search engines.
https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2016/06/02/seo-settings-panel/To gain search engine attention, I recommend that you start publishing posts (not pages) https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ frequently. That’s because it can take weeks for search engines to index content in a new blog and/or to re-index content under a new URL.

Hi,
I followed the instructions at –
“To verify blog ownership of a WordPress.com hosted blog with the major search engines you must use this process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/”
word for word and keep getting the Save error message. Do you know why that is?
Thanks Michael -

Thanks,
Although I assume I am already subscribed to the thread (I am not a forum expert).
For reference, below are the two meta tags I don’t seem to be able to save in the SOE tab –Bing
<meta name=”msvalidate.01″ content=”49814ADC4CDB272681E74F1EBC04DAE1″ />
Google
<meta name=”google-site-verification” content=”lDn2ULAoOQqxHzvnjsZZMdQJt8EyjCRK0P56hkuIe3c” />

re: WordPress.COM metadata access
There is no metadata access for us wordpress.COM bloggers and we cannot insert any code into the <header>. This is a multi-user blogging platform. Our blogs share a common architecture. We bloggers cannot access metadata on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. Note http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/ -
There is a tab under Settings called SOE that is “supposed” to allow you to add these meta tags.

Are you referring to this?

Thanks. Staff will assist you as soon as they can. Staff to work their way forward through threads that were tagged for their help prior to this one being tagged. And, as would be expected, Staff serve the threads with the earliest datestamps first and work their way forward to the most recent ones.

If you add those tags and it won’t save, the first thing I’d try is clearing the browser cache and cookies and then try again. It could be that something stuck in the cache is preventing the tag from saving.
Also note that you must leave the page on Google/Bing where you get the tag open while you try to save it on our end.
But also note you don’t need to verify your site in those tools for it to be indexed. Your site is set to public, so search engines are already crawling it. But the process takes around 6 to 8 weeks to complete before your site will start appearing in search results.
We actively ping all the major search engines every time you publish a new post, so the best thing you can do right now is to publish new original content regularly, a few times a week. You can see this post for info on the best ways to make your posts as search friendly as possible:
