Solar Theme – Remove Sidebar from homepage

  • Unknown's avatar

We purchased the Solar theme because of the gorgeous, clean, gallery-like homepage look. (https://solardemo.wordpress.com/)

Since we’ve applied it to our site we’re failing to get the same beautiful look because of the right hand sidebar. How can we remove that sidebar?

Also, once we do get it removed will the posts begin falling into that beautiful gallery-like layout that we love? Or is there something else that we need to check or turn on for that to happen?

Not super important: but does anyone know if the black square quote from the demo site is a specific type of post or a photo?

Thanks so much for your help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m looking for the same answer. I’ve figured out that what we’re trying to take off the homepage is the sidebar, where all the widgets are. But when a blog post is clicked, the sidebar appears on that page and I’m okay with all the widgets there.

I did figure out that to change from single column to grid layout on the home page, you have to go to Appearance, then Customize and it’s tab that says “Theme” (Chose layout for blog archive). Just select “Grid”.

Then I had to learn how to change the blog on the homepage so that it didn’t just all appear as one great big long column. You see on the example how their blog posts say, “Read more…”. That is done while you’re editing the blog post. In the bunch of icons where you change your font to Bold, Italics, etc. etc, hover over it, you’ll see one that says “Insert Read More Tag”. So you just click that and it inserts a line after where you want your blog post to cut off.

    Hope that helps?

I fell in love with the solar theme too and have been working with it for the last week or so, just trying to navigate around it on my own. Managed to figure some things out, but still want help with those sidebars not appearing on the homepage, but appearing on the other pages. Can’t find the answers anywhere.

Thanks! I finally figured it out last night. If you go to “Appearance” > “Widgets” > “Sidebar” (on the top right) and just drop it down and open and “delete” each widget on that side bar it goes away from the homepage. (But it’s actually gone from all of my individual posts too, which is what I wanted, but if you want them there and not on the homepage I have no idea how to do that. This is my first time creating a site.)

I only have some test posts in right now, but you can see it’s looking much more like the demo now! http://capemaygetaways.com/

I did check out your blog, and saw that you had the homepage without widgets! I love it – this theme reminds me a lot of Pinterest. But yeah, I want to keep the widgets etc on the blog post pages. I like the widgets for signing up for our blog, Follow us on Twitter, etc. But I don’t know how to have them only on certain pages.

    Best of luck moving forward!

Just got an answer! In case you want to add widgets to some of your pages afterwards. When you open up a widget to edit it, there is a little button beside the Save button that says “Display”! You go in there and tell it which pages to display the widgets on. So I changed all my conditions to be “Hide if…Page…is Front Page”.

Oh that’s perfect for later on! Thank you!!

What dimensions did you use for your logo? I can’t seem to make mine look as nicely placed and proportional as yours.

I wonder how to make the HOME with two columns of posts and Sidebar. Exactly as shown in this page: http://demo.themeskingdom.com/solar/grid/

I’ve been reading the posts of you but I did not succeed.

    Thank U!

If you would like to have the sidebar appear on just your homepage only, you need to go in to the Visibility button in each of the Widgets that you have added to the Sidebar. (This is all found under the Customize section). Change the conditions to “Show if”, “Page is”, “Front Page”.

Also, you may not have your settings changed to “Grid”. That is found in Customize, then Theme, then select Grid from the drop down box.

In customize not appear the option to switch to GRID. See the screen http://pt-br.tinypic.com/r/n4zigz/8
