[solved] missing/invalid WXR version number

    While trying to import my self-hosted blog into wordpress.com I receive this error message:

    Import WordPress
    Using LIBXML_COMPACT

    Sorry, there has been an error.
    This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number

    My self-hosted blog is running WordPress v4.3.1
    My XML file is a fresh export from Wp-Admin-> Tools -> Export
    My XML file size is 10,478,351 bytes – well below the “15 MB” file size limit specified on the wordpress.com Import screen.

    I found two solutions:
    1) I could individually export & import the three different files supported by the export function (Pages, then Posts, then Feedback)

    2) I also found that compressing my XML using gzip worked. I’m on windows, so I did this:
    – download and install 7-zip
    – use 7-zip to compress my wordpress export using ‘gzip’ format
    – upload the new ‘gzip’ file in the ‘Import’ dialogue on wordpress.com

    Note: the gzipped XML file is 1,699,994 bytes
