Some basic questions about starting WordPress
-
Hello all!
I own a “.hu” (hungarian) domain for a few weeks now and want to finally start my WordPress webpage but I’m a bit confused about features which I want to clarify before I pay.
1. I want to purchase the Personal plan. When I browse themes I can sort them as “all” “free” and “premium”. The latter is only available with the “Premium” plan? Or anyone who buys any plan?
(basically if I see “premium feature” does it mean “for paying customers only” OR “only with the premium plan” ?)2. Can I get an (email visible only to moderators and staff) email from WP or do I need to sort that with my domain registrator? Because for that I would have to buy storage from them and it costs a little too much just for an email.
3. How soon can I start setting up my website after paying? Does setting up my already owned domain with WP makes it a slower process to start?
4. My website will be a very minimal online portfolio and some basic infos in the menu, like prices. I was thinking the theme “Sketch”. Is it possible that when you click on an image it just enlarges instead of opening a new page?
Sorry for the stupid questions. Thank you in advance.

Ugh my example email got redacted.
So under the second question I’m asking about an email like “info at mydomain.hu”

Only the Business upgrade provides access to all Premium themes. The Premium upgrade does not have any premium themes included. They are all individually priced one time only purchases.

re: purchasing WordPress.COM upgrades
WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.
Details:
There are no trial upgrades, no monthly payment plans, no bulk deal upgrades, and no multiple year upgrades.
We are billed annually and we must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase after selecting a plan.
Also note that purchase orders are not accepted.
Each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed. (The only exceptions are one time upgrades for premium themes and guided transfers.)The Premium Plan does not include access to premium themes. Premium themes can be purchased separately and are each a one-time purchase. https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/
The Business upgrade which is the only plan that includes Google analytics also includes access to all Premium themes and other inclusions you can read about at:
Footer Credit Options https://en.support.wordpress.com/footer-credits/
SEO Tools https://en.support.wordpress.com/seo-tools/
However, note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.
When you upgrade from Personal to Premium or from Premium to Business you pay the difference between the two plans https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/domain-mapping-almost-impossible-to-understand-how-it-works?replies=4#post-2874012How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs

You email address was originally redacted by our software for a good reason. This is a public support forum and everyone with internet access can access it. So I tagged this thread for Staff to remove your email address as if that is not done it will be spammed mercilessly.

3. How soon can I start setting up my website after paying? Does setting up my already owned domain with WP makes it a slower process to start?
You can set it up right now. There is no delay.
4. My website will be a very minimal online portfolio and some basic infos in the menu, like prices. I was thinking the theme “Sketch”. Is it possible that when you click on an image it just enlarges instead of opening a new page?
Yes. See https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/

Thanks but I already read a bunch of stuff and I’m not a native speaker and it’s just getting more and more confusing.
Can you just please tell a yes/no if I can get a mydomain.hu email from WP? I will look up the “how”, I just want to know if I’m reading for hours for nothing.

You cannot purchase a .hu domain through wordpress.COM. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#available-domains However, you can purchase it from a registrar that sells .hu domains and then map to that existing domain from your .wordpress.com site URL after Staff add a zone record for you.

re: Premium plan purchases.
You have to select the plan first. Please go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ to upgrade.
If you have any difficulties see what Staff said here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/custom-domain-89?replies=6#post-2882612
You can use the Personal Plan, yes, but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically.
Go to My Site ->Plans and buy the Personal Plan, and then you can go back and claim your free domain at My Site ->Domains ->Add.

Thank you!
Another stupid question arose: if I get email forwarding, that means if I get an email I can’t reply with “something @ mydomain.hu” right? I can only receive but can’t send emails with my custom domain name?
-
I found this:
“By default, your emails are sent with your existing email address in the From line. That is, others will see your existing email address and not the email address you set up using email forwarding.”
What does this mean? Existing email is like blabla88 @ gmail.com? So the one I sent the forwarding to?
-
Hi szaborebeka,
if I get email forwarding, that means if I get an email I can’t reply with “something @ mydomain.hu” right? I can only receive but can’t send emails with my custom domain name?
With email forwarding you can only receive email to an email address using a custom domain:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/
It’s possible to connect your domain to another provider in order to setup an email address. This would enable you to send and receive email from that address:
Can you just please tell a yes/no if I can get a mydomain.hu email from WP?
It’s not currently possible to register a .hu domain through WordPress.com:
.hu domains can be purchased elsewhere and mapped to your site.
I own a “.hu” (hungarian) domain for a few weeks now
If you already own the domain, you can map it to your WordPress.com site with Domain Mapping:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
You will need a paid WordPress.com plan (Personal, Premium or Business). Each paid plan includes a free domain credit which you can use to map a domain you already own (or register a new one).
When I browse themes I can sort them as “all” “free” and “premium”. The latter is only available with the “Premium” plan?
The Premium plan includes unlimited Premium themes.
Come back to me if you have any questions.
