some domain questions
-
Hi, I guess I have two domain questions.
1. I asked about a free webhost a few days ago. It was kind of funny thesacredpath, you directed me to a nice listing of free webhosts that support wordpress and at the time I read that list I had already selected one that was listed there. They have two options. They said that using your own domain was better than using there subdomain. Which do you guys recommend?
2. If I move to a domain, do I need to come back here to renew the domain upgrade after I’ve moved or does the domain transfer to my webhost and everything is managed there? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I suggest getting your own domain name and in that way it can travel with you wherever your journeys take you.
You can buy the domain name here and then point it at your new web host, or perhaps you can even buy it through the new web host. Most offer that service. Just make sure and verify with them that if later you move to a different host, you can take the domain name with you. I’ve hear of some that will not let you make the DNS changes necessary to do that.

Ok, so I don’t have to come back here to renew the domain registration? It is a little weird because they recommend a domain yet they don’t offer domain registration.

You renew with whoever your registrar is – WordPress.com does offer Domain Registration on an annual basis. Fail to renew and your Domain goes away.

Automattic (wordpress) is now a full-fledged domain registrar, so there is no reason not to register the domain name here. It is less expensive than many registrars and easy to administer through your dashboard here.
If you want to get away from wordpress.COM entirely, then you will have to register the domain name elsewhere such as at network solutions (expensive) or perhaps somewhere like godaddy or blue host, or perhaps another registrar.

Yes, I knew that. I am planning to get the domain from wordpress.com, and when my blog is mapped to that domain move it over to another host. Will I have to come back here to renew the upgrade every year or can I do this through my current webhost at the time?
