some editing icons wrongly labeled- both rows 1 & 2

  • Unknown's avatar

The “kitchen sink” of editing options is showing incorrect functions.
The box that appears to enable a 1-2-3 point list, when you place the arrow on it, becomes and is actually italics. The labeling is wrong. This is not the only box where this is true. Everything on the top row on the right from italics to blockquote is labeled wrong. On the bottom row underlind and align full (to the right of “format”) are labeled incorrectly. Actually it is changing as I speak. There are now blanks in places as well.

    Hi there,

Could you please try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

Don’t hesitate to contact us again if you need anymore help. :-)

Cleared the cache and the cookies but no change. Also I have to click on the space where I write for what I have written previously to appear. Or I go to HTML and then back to Visual and the text appears. Otherwise its blank. All recent developments.

  • Can you please tell us which browser (and version of) you’re using?

My laptop is Windows XP d610 and I do most of my editing in Internet Explorer. But now I’m going to Google Chrome to download pictures from URL’s because when I hit Insert Picture from Internet explorer nothing happens. But in Google Chrome, sometimes I cannot move to the next line! I also have Mozilla Firefox but you cannot copy and paste live URL’s from Mozilla Firefox, and mine is a resource page. This defeats the purpose.
Google Chrome however, does get the kitchen sink right, as does Mozilla Firefox.
But not Internet Explorer- that’s where the problem is.

  • Which version of Internet Explorer are you running?

  • Unknown's avatar

    IE8.0.6001.1870.2IC
    Cipher Strength 128 bit.

  • Is there any chance that you could upgrade to IE 9?

It’s a much better browser, by far.

Unfortunately not with my Windows XP laptop. When I clicked for IE9 that is what was conveyed.

  • Are you running any add-ons with IE? If so, would you mind disabling those to see if that makes any difference?

  • Unknown's avatar

I disabled them. No change. Recently I added Quick Time 7. Could that have done it.

The problems you described should not be happening. For IE8, the upload/insert media icon should be working. Please try completely closing the browser and re-opening it. Sometimes that helps with IE8. For Chrome, you should be able to move to the next line. For the Firefox pasting live links issue does seem like a browser limitation, but if you’d like to consider making some of the text clickable instead of inserting URLs as live links, the link tool in the visual editor is a really good tool for that.

I have tested the media icon in IE and the editor in Chrome, and I couldn’t reproduce the issues you described. This makes me think that something is happening at the browser level on your computer that is causing trouble for you, and it’s hard to say what it is from our side. I think the WordPress.com editors are working properly for all of the latest stable browser versions.

During editing, if you see any warning icons or notices in your browser status bar such as a yellow triangle, could you click on it and let us know what pulls up. An error or warning message from when the browser is not working for you may help lead to any problems on our side. However, if the problems are at the browser level, you may not see any notices.

If you continue to have trouble with the editor in some browsers, one alternate solution which a lot of Windows users like is a downloadable program called Windows Live Writer. You may want to try out an offline editor like that if your continue to have browser issues.
