Some links are not working
-
I have a site with links to resumes. The resumes are in the Media Library as Word docs, not PDFs. When the links are selected by me (the Administrator), I see the resumes. When the links are selected by two other people (not Administartors; the same exact website; I checked), they see a download page, not the resumes. I don’t get it. The only thing that I can think of is that this is a new site and I am making changes regularly. Perhaps I’m looking at a non-updated site and they’re looking at the site after it was updated. I’ve notice that popup that says there is a later version, would I like to update to that. I almost always say yes.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Thank you for such a quick response. I am using .docx and uploading them into the Media Library. What would cause my computer to be able to see the linked one-page .docx resumes when I click a link and others elsewhere to see a download page rather than the resumes themselves?

There is no other means of making a PDF available within a blog post. You can either upload the pdf and provide a link, or use Scribd, Google docs or Issuu

I’m not using PDFs. I’m using .docx Word docs as indicated on one of the links you so kindly sent to me:
“Accepted Filetypes
StandardCurrently, you are permitted to upload the following file types to your WordPress.com blog (no upgrade required):
Accepted Filetypes

See the Images help page for examples and details.Documents
.pdf (Portable Document Format; Adobe Acrobat)
.doc, .docx (Microsoft Word Document) – this is what I used ★★★
.key (Apple Keynote Presentation)
.ppt, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx (Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation)
.odt (OpenDocument Text Document)
.xls, .xlsx (Microsoft Excel Document)
.zip, if you have the WordPress.com Premium or WordPress.com”I am a rank beginner with this and have done a lot of reading to get this right but clearly failed in some way. What’s troubling is that I do see the resumes when I click on the name links. I even signed-out in case my being the Administrator was causing me to see this. Others are looking at the same site via the same website link and cannot see the resumes when they click on the same name links within the website.
This is important since this webpage brings mentors and college students who want mentoring together. The website is public; take a look: https://ollimentors.wordpress.com/.

Does it matter that this is not a blog post but just a page post? Also, why would it work perfectly when I click on the link? If it doesn’t work for others, wouldn’t it be consistent and not work for me?

If you have the time, you could go onto the website and take a look on the OLLI Mentors page. it’s avery simple website with only the Homepage, the OLLI Mentors tab and a Contact tab:L https://ollimentors.wordpress.com/.

Hi there,
Where on the site, https://ollimentors.wordpress.com/, is this? I don’t see any page titled OLLI Mentors, and I don’t see any links to Word documents on any of the other pages.
That said, if you insert a Word document into a post or page via the media library, the link should cause the file to be downloaded, not opened in your browser. The fact that it opens for you is the unusual occurrence here, and is most likely because of a browser extension which allows you to open the link instead of downloading it.

Kokkieh: the two links are placed on the bottom part of the artwork. They certainly don’t standout. I didn’t place them there. That’s simply where they appeared. I have no idea how to move them, change their order (which I’d like to do) or make them standout.
-
You said that you had added Word documents on your site. I don’t see any links to the Word documents you are referring to.

Are you speaking of where it says Contact and Mentor Profiles? That is your site’s menu, and is automatically added when you publish any page on your site. You can control what appears in the menu by creating a custom menu.
-
kokkieh – yes, those are the links I was referring to. I see what you mean. The Mentor Profiles page has 3-4 links to pages where I dropped in word docs. Sorry, I misstated that originally.
I would like to add another link next to Contact and Mentor Profiles and call it Homepage, which would get viewers back to the page with all the text that is the Homepage when they are looking at the Mentor Profiles. I understand that this can be done by creating a Custom Menu. I will do that. Thank you.
-
I checked the other pages, but I don’t see the Word docs linked there, which is why I asked on which pages those appear.
A Custom Menu will allow you to add a link back to your front page, yes. If you create the menu and click Add Page, there should be a custom link already listed to link to the home page, so you can just add that.
Remember to set the menu as your site’s primary menu.
