Some links are not working

kokkieh – I’m going to have 40-60 images of faces in the Media Library. I don’t see any way to see names of those images unless I run the cursor over the image.

Now most of these images have dates of when the photos were taken. If I run the cursor over each image, I see the image title, which is a date. Is there anyway to change this title after the image has been deposited in the Media Library?

  • I don’t want the extra lines. I know that I can delete them one by one in the HTML view. But is there any way that I can format the basic Word doc before pasting into my site.

Paste the Word text into Notes first, and then copy-paste it from there into your post. Word uses a different type of code than the post editor, so the only way to prevent the extra lines is to completely strip out any formatting from the Word doc before pasting it here. Pasting it into a plain text editor like Notes first will do that.

Is there any way to convert the Write button so that it creates “pages” only?

There is not. That button’s purpose is as a fast way to create new posts, as that’s what WordPress is actually designed for. The only way to create pages is via Pages ->Add. There is no way to convert a post into a page. You’ll need to copy the content of the post and paste it into a new page.

    Post vs. Page

how do Editors get to the Media Library on the website? I want then to be able to add head shots of mentors. I know that I can do this via the WP Admin link. Will that work for them to?

To directly access the media library you need to go to WP-Admin, yes. Editors do have access to the media library.

Is there anyway to change this title after the image has been deposited in the Media Library?

The best option is to change the file name of the image files before you upload them to the media library. Once uploaded you cannot change the file name, but you can set an image title. Click on the image in the library, and type a title in the Title box.

kokkieh – thank you so much. Things are moving smoothly along. I’ve created a very detailed tutorial for the Mentors (3) and it’s helped getting them going. Each time I get a response from you, I change the tutorial to incorporate your latest.

I’ve decided to title the Contact box with the last name of the mentor plus three more words (ie, Cook mentee website response). So the mentor Cook can see in an email that he just received that a prospective mentee is responding to his profile on this website, hopefully requesting a call or meeting as a prelude to a mentoring relationship.

So WordPress automatically allows mentors and mentees to start the ball rolling with no staffing! Very nice.

We actually have a tutorial already for WordPress.com in general. Haven’t I linked to it yet in this thread?

We also have tutorial videos in the Automattic channel on Youtube if you want to look at those :)

Indeed. I’ve never thought of using WordPress.com in this way before, but it’s definitely a great idea :)

but you can set an image title. Click on the image in the library, and type a title in the Title box.

Where is the image title visible? Is it visible wherever the image is vidible? If not, what is its value?

At least now editors can run their cursor over the images in the Media Library and see the file name, which I have changed to the last name if the mentor.

  • Where is the image title visible? Is it visible wherever the image is vidible? If not, what is its value?

It’s not visible on the site, but it’s visible to search engines, and in the list view in the media library that’s the title that will show for each image. If you want a title visible on the image on the site you need to add an image caption. You do that after you insert the image into a post.

Insert the image, click on it, and click the speech bubble icon to add a caption.

    Kokkieh –

    1. It looks like I can adjust the sizes of the mugshot images in the Amelia Library, right?

    2. Under what circumstances will a visitor to our website looking at the contact box see his name and email? Does that only happen if someone has Admin or Editor privileges? What about others who sign in? I assume that visitors who do not sign in always have to fill out their names and email before sendinthe contact form.

kokkieh – any reason not to crop mugshot images in Media Library rather than crop them begore adding to the Media Library!

Amelia library? I don’t know what that is.

Those details are saved in someone’s browsers, so it depends on whether they have their browser set up to save form data or not. We have no control over that from our side, and it’s not dependant on whether someone is logged in or not on WordPress.com

Editing images in your library can lead to media storage being used up faster as both the original and the edited version will be stored in the library. But if you won’t be adding many images to start with, that shouldn’t matter.

Sorry, should have been Media Library. Amelia runs a bar not a library!

We’ll be adding 50-70 mugshots, small face photos. Can’t I go in there and delete the originals to save space?

kokkieh – where do I go to see capacity used vs total capacity offered by free WP website?

  • Sorry, should have been Media Library. Amelia runs a bar not a library!

Haha! You can resize in the library, but the same applies as with cropping – the copy and the original will be saved.

The library will only list one image – the edited one. The original is saved in the background so you can restore it if needed, but there’s no way to access it directly.

However, with 70 images you’ll hardly make a dent in the total media storage, so I wouldn’t worry about that.

You can see your total storage used in the At a Glance section of the WP-Admin dashboard, and in the media library itself:

    https://olliroy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

You’re currently using 1% of your storage space.

kokkieh – my editors can’t get to the page where they can crop photos. I do that by clicking on My Sites and then WP Admin at eh bottom of the left column. Then I go into Media Libra, find an image that I want to crop, click Edit and, finally, click EDIT IMAGE which allows me to crop and change the image size. My Editors do not see the EDIT IMAGE. Why is that?

How can they get to the page that allows image cropping an resizing since they don’t see what I see?

  • Editors should be able to edit images. Or do you mean they cannot reach the WP-Admin dashboard? The WP-Admin link doesn’t show for all users in the My Site menu, so you need to give them the direct link to reach the dashboard instead:

    https://ollimentors.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

From there they can access the media library and edit the image.

Yes, that’s the problem. So the link you gave me will work for Editors even though it includes the wp-admin in the link?

  • Yes, everyone on your site uses the exact same link for the WP-Admin dashboard. Someone who isn’t a user on your site will see an error if they try to click that link, while you and the editors you added will be able to access the actual dashboard.

Editors just won’t see all the options you see, for example, the Appearance menu doesn’t show at all for editors. That only shows for admins.

As long as the Editors can get to the page that allows cropping and resizing of images, which none of them have been able to find.

kokkieh – I created a page to add to my Library section of articles. I cannot remember how to add this page into the Library section. I looked for Library under Parent Pages and it wasn’t there like my other major sections: Home, Mentor Profiles and Contact. So How do I move this page under Library?

One other question: I see that OLLI Mentors is indented under Insu Hyams (one of the mentors) on the Page Attributes/Parent section. How can I correct that? It should not be indented under any mentor’s name.

  • So How do I move this page under Library?

You need to edit your custom menu.

    1) Click on My Sites, then click the Customize button next to Themes.

    2) Click on Menus ->OLLI Mentors Menu

    3) Click Add Items ->Pages and add the page

    4) Use the Reorder link to move the page so it’s indented below the Library item of the menu, and Save.

I see that OLLI Mentors is indented under Insu Hyams (one of the mentors) on the Page Attributes/Parent section. How can I correct that? It should not be indented under any mentor’s name.

Edit the Mentors Profiles page at My Site ->Pages. Under Page Attributes set the Parent Page option to No Parent, and update the page.
