Some of my pages aren’t loading properly in the first try and slow

  • Unknown's avatar

My home page, (http://sisestateplanning.com), is not loading properly on the first try sometimes even though the page loads quite fast and I have to refresh a few times, for it to load properly.

My other page http://sisestateplanning.com/class/ loads very slow for some reason even when I made the page size smaller and optimzed the images by converting all to .webp format.

Can anyone help me on this please.

  • Hello @keelekheng123

Thank you for reaching out. We have a few recommendations for improving your site’s performance and speed that you may want to review, here: Improve Your Website’s Speed and Performance

It can be helpful to run your site through services such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights for indications of what could be affecting your site’s performance.

I also recommend trying the Jetpack Boost plugin that is designed to help optimize your site by streamlining CSS and JavaScript running on the site, and helping you optimize your site’s images. You can read more about Jetpack Boost here: https://jetpack.com/boost/

This is the feedback from google’s pagespeed insights. The above image is for the class page and the below is the home page. Is there any feedback on how I can improve these points?

    This is not good hahahah

  • Thank you for the details. While our support scope is limited when it comes to performance issues that often stem from plugins, themes, and content, I do see several issues on that page, such as the very large image loading. This image very large and can be reduced: https://sisestateplanning.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/dee_00_2.jpg

You also have other content and embeds on that page that can slow it down. You can expand each section of the PageSpeed report and it will show you what specifically is loading slowly. I noticed YouTube is cited as slowing down the Class page so I would test that out.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I looked up online and found that I can embed the youtube videos to have a facade so that it loads faster, and will only load the youtube video when clicked upon. May I know what I can use to do this?

Is there any way to edit the html code of the website directly as well? I’m currently looking into how to reduce the size and improve the load speed of the largest contentful paint element.

  • Although I’m not familiar with the type of embedding you mention, where videos aren’t pre-loaded, it might be that functionality is available either through a plugin or via custom coding.

To edit HTML in the way you mentioned would require access to the theme files. Essentially what you’d do is either create your own theme or customize an existing one. You might also want to look into creating a child theme for this, as that’s usually a lot easier, in part because it allows you to start with a working parent theme and just override the template parts you want to customize, and partly because it’s easy to “rewind” if things don’t go as planned ;)

This kind of customization can be done with sites on the Creator plan.

That said, one of the greatest speed improvements that most sites can make is optimizing images so that the file size is as small as possible without losing quality. You can find out about ways to optimize your images in this guide.

For most sites on WordPress.com, where we’re already optimizing for the fastest loading times possible, image optimization will make the biggest difference to loading times by far.
