some readers unable to comment

Hi – I wrote a couple of weeks ago to try and resolve a problem & Jerome was helping me. Unfortunately, I’ve lost the thread and the issue of certain readers being unable to comment is still a problem. One acquaintance wrote again yesterday: Anita Oliver I tried to comment without my email as you suggested and it would not allow it. Her email address is [email redacted] and she noted that “it’s not the email I use with WP.” Can you check my settings or suggest any fixes? 2 people were unable to comment this week although I received comments from both WP and non-WP users. I belong to an active blogging group and we try to give feedback. Thanks!

Subscribed to thread again and standing by. Thanks!

Another added problem with the comments section seems to be that some readers who are commenting have now become anonymous. This worked so well in the past and it seems that my fixes have now created other new problems. Looking forward to a resolution!

    Hi Anita,

One acquaintance wrote again yesterday: Anita Oliver I tried to comment without my email as you suggested and it would not allow it.

Can you ask your acquaintance exactly what happened when she tried to comment without her email? For example, did she see an error message?

Your settings are correct to allow visitors to comment without leaving an email address, so knowing the specific error message she saw may help us track down what happened with that.

Another added problem with the comments section seems to be that some readers who are commenting have now become anonymous.

Since you allow visitors to comment without leaving a name and email address, it’s possible for them to leave an anonymous comment. If you want to prevent anonymous comments, you’ll need to require your commenters to leave their name and email address, as well.

To solve the anonymous problem: If I change the settings back to requiring an email address and a name then I’m back to square one where the readers who want to comment but have an email address affiliated with WP have to sign in (some aren’t able to do that) to comment? Any solution in between? Thanks, Anita

    Hi Anita,

If some of your visitors have an email address linked to a WordPress.com account, and they’re having trouble signing in, we can investigate that issue for them. (They can contact us directly if they’d like for help sorting that error out.)

That way, you can avoid anonymous comments and those folks can comment from the email/account that they prefer. :)

Thanks for your help and I’ll pass along your suggestions. I do like knowing the commenter’s name – seems like a trade-off between more comments and names affiliated with WP… no easy answer! Anita
