some sort of alphabetic order

    hey folks,

my question is not really a problem, but more a how-could-i-realize-it. i’m working on the following:

i want to use wordpress as some kind of book-plattform, with presentations of single books. now i would like to offer different kinds of search options – alphabetically by title/last name, tags and categories.
the tags and categories are no problem at all, but i have no idea how i could manage an order by title/the author’s last name. i could use the book’s title as the title of the posting, but what about the author’s name? is it possible to define some kind of subtitle for posts, or has anyone any ideas about how to do this?

i would be glad about any answers!

The Titles of the books and the Author’s names can be made into Categories. This will make search retrieval possible (see (2) below).

These are the options available for you to choose from with respect to crediting authors in a group blog.

    (1) You can choose a theme that provides for and displays individual authors. There are theme reviews that can assist you in determining if a theme provides this “authors” feature. Look in the section titled “Display post author”.

    (2) If the theme you prefer to use does not this feature then you can create a category called “Authors” as a “parent” category and then create “children” (Tom, Dick, Harry) sub-categories for each author’s name under the parent category Authors.

    (3) Or if neither of the above options are suitable then you can have each author include a byline in the posts they create.

You can also make a site index http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/11/how-do-i-make-a-site-index/

    dear timethief,

thanks a lot for your quick answer, but I guess you misunderstood me.

I don’t want to sort the posts by their authors’ names, but by the last name of the book’s author they are presenting.

for example, it is unnessecary to solve the problem with the book’s titles by using categories, ’cause a book’s name is a unique name, and categories should be used for more than one post.

nice to meet you alexle! :D

the only solution i can think of is an easy one – but it can be a drudgery. you can do a seperate post/page where the authors will be listed alphabetically. you have to constantly update it, that’s the problem. if youi have many authors undera single alphabet, youcan even do the “page jump” thing. have a button or text link in the side bar linked to that post.

you can do it even in the side bar – by ading a text bar. again, it has to be updated manually.

if you want to show all the authors visibly in the side bar (no page jump is available here), i would still advise you to do the list in a post and save it as a draft. so that whenever you need to update the authors links, you can easily do it using the blog editor – to link and provide “alt” text and also to be able to see the preview. once you are satisfied, you will just have to copy the whole thing and paste it in the side bar.

i am personally working on developping a “contents” post too. as i miss that sort of navigation in a blog. i intend to link to the contents post via a button in a text widget. :D

What you can do is make a page that has the list of authors on it. Each author’s name would be linked to the search result within your blog.

So, say you have Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., as one of your authors. When you click on his name on the page of authors, you would be taken to the search results for his name.

The link would look something like this:
    Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

    <a href="http://testestesting.wordpress.com/?s=vonnegut">Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.</a>

You would have to manually update the page, but i don’t think that’s a whole heck of a lot of work.

I don’t want to sort the posts by their authors’ names, but by the last name of the book’s author they are presenting.

Why mess around with Pages that need updating? There’s nothing preventing you from creating a Category for the last name of each book’s author.
