Some users unable to log in to view my protected blog

I have created and hosted a WordPress blog with restricted access (dblooptrip.com), and two of the users are reporting that when they click ‘accept invitation’ and log in using the username/email and password they just created, they are unable to do so. Instead of giving them an error message, they are just redirected back to the same page that says ‘http://dblooptrip.com/ is marked private by its owner. If you were invited to view this site, please log in below.’ Each time, they are unable to actually log in and progress beyond this page. They just keep being redirected back to that login page.

One of the users said he was able to view the blog without issues on his iPad, but his desktop—even after deleting cookies, clearing the cache, and trying different browsers—is not letting him log on to view the blog directly. The only way he can actually access the blog is by logging in to WordPress.com and viewing the blog (which he follows) on his WordPress Reader homepage. If he tries to access the blog via the direct URL, he reaches that same login screen and cannot progress, even though his username and password is correct.

I’m not sure what else to do—I’ve tried deleting and re-issuing their invitations, but WP admin shows they are approved users. And I have been unable to recreate this issue on my end, even with different browsers and when using several different test usernames.

Any help or other troubleshooting options would be appreciated! I only know of 2 users out of 100+ that have experienced this issue so far, but I’m worried others may be experiencing this and have not yet come forward for help.

Thank you so much in advance!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Please ask those users to make sure they are logged into their WordPress.com accounts, and THEN click the link in the invitation email. If you do it the other way around, then it won’t work.

What is the link he’s trying to use? As the user is able to log into his WordPress.com account, could you ask him to post here himself so we can troubleshoot this with him directly?

Thank you for your quick response!

However, one of the users having this problem has already accepted the invitation. The problem does not seem to be that they cannot accept the invitation initially and view the blog, but more that when these users try to go back to the protected blog at this specific link, later, and log in with their approved username and password, they are unable to get past this screen that says “http://dblooptrip.com/ is marked private by its owner. If you were invited to view this site, please log in below,” and prompts for a login. When they enter their approved login credentials on that page, as prompted, the screen just refreshes itself, vs. accepting the credentials and logging them in to the blog. They don’t even receive an error message, either.

It sounds like you think if they go to http://www.wordpress.com first, then log in, and then visit dblooptrip.com, they will be able to view the protected blog. While I’ll tell them to try that, I am just confused why they cannot just visit http://www.dblooptrip.com and log in right from there.

As a side note, my test username (an invited blog viewer) has no problem logging in to this screen directly. For me, it’ll accept my credentials and log my test user in to the blog, which also means the test user is logged in to WordPress in general.

I’m hoping to figure out as much as I can and pass the information along to these users, as I am an assistant at a company and I would much rather handle as much as I can myself, before telling these users to post and followup on the forums directly. (I’m worried they may not have the time to do so.)

Thank you again for your help! I realize the troubleshooting telephone game is very challenging, but I very much appreciate your patience and advice!

That’s just a quirk of the system. It’s supposed to work like you want it to, but it doesn’t always work like that. First logging in and then accepting the invitation/navigating to the private site should work, but logging in at the site is known to cause problems.

Something else that might be causing this: ask the users to check that their browsers have third-party cookies enabled. I realise many people opt to disable cookies due to the perceived security risk, but WordPress.com uses cookies to track user logins across different WordPress.com sites. If a user have cookies disabled, WordPress.com will no longer recognise them as logged in by the time they reach your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

Not at all. I’ve been doing this for a while and am used to this way of doing things :)

Thank you so much! I will have them try logging in from the WordPress homepage first, as well as tell them to enable third-party cookies. As both of them are tech-savvy enough to have adjusted their browser settings in the first place, I have a strong suspicion that might be the issue!

Thank you again, and have a great Monday. :)

  • Monday was ending in three minutes over here when you wrote that, but I’ll have a great Tuesday instead ;-)

Let us know if they still have problems with this.
