some widgets appearing at the bottom of the page
-
Hi
I recenty created my own graphic titles for things I wanted to appear in the sidebars and it went pretty well. However I have no idea why “about” and “blogroll” happily sit at the top of the left-hand sidebar and archive ends up all the way down the bottom? Similarly in the righthand sidebar all widgets are appearing at the bottom.
Any help most gratefully received!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The reason your sidebar has fallen and is displaying below your posts is either due to copying and pasting or it can also be a result of importing text containing invalid HTML.
Typically this is caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts or in a text widget. You must locate it and close it.
Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”
Now, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.
If it’s not, then look for an open HTML tag and close it. Check your blog again and see if it is back to normal. If it’s still “messed up” then open the next post and do the same thing post by post until it goes back to normal.
If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here so you know how to do this correctly in the future. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
Best wishes with your blog. :)

Hi timethief, thanks for the response!
I looked in each and every posting and clicked the “close tags” button, but nothing showed up. I also checked all of my widgets for open tags and found none and I did as you mentioned and added and removed a space in every single post and saved. All sadly to no avail.
I did paste text from two posts into Word and back again (when the wordpress spellcheck was out of action) – do you think this could be the cause? If so, how do I rectify it? I had a look at the html in those posts and couldn’t see anything amiss.
Thanks again,
Cori

Yes copying and pasting from Word without using icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor is notorious fro causing this. What you must do is edit the two posts and copy all the content. Click icon 6 in Row 2 of the Visual editor. A pop-up box will appear. Paste all the content into it and slick insert into post. That will strip out any extraneous HTML and insert clean HTML into the post. Then click “Update” to save it and republish it.

Hi thanks for the quick response!
I went into the two posts in question and cut out all the text and re-pasted in using the insert from word button and still no joy! Aaaahhh so frustrating!!
Any other suggestions?

Don’t know if this will help, and I haven’t checked your blog, but if you’ve added a new widget recently, the bad code might be in there. I recently put in a widget and accidentally put in two
</div>tags in, and that pushed everything in the sidebar below that widget to the bottom. I found the offending tag, deleted it, and the sidebar was fixed. So if you haven’t checked your widgets as well as your posts, you may want to do that. (And yet one more reason to love WordPerfect: no weird formatting when cutting and pasting into a browser text box! ;-P) -
Thanks for the suggestion mmadfan – I did check the html in the widgets and it appears to be fine. Incidentally this problem occurred some time (weeks) after the widgets were in place so I don’t think its the code.
But thanks!! :-) And yes, totally agree another reason NOT to use MSWord!

I’m seeing all your widgets in place in all three browsers I’m using (so I suspect you’re using Explorer).
Anyway, the only wrong thing I can see in your sourcecode is the list you have created for your “blogroll” text widget. You’ve written this:
<li>LINK1 HERE</li> <li>LINK2 HERE</li> [etc.]Try changing it to this and see if it helps:
<ul> <li>LINK1 HERE</li> <li>LINK2 HERE</li> [etc.] </ul> -
Hurray thanks panaghiotisadam – you’ve saved the day. Turns out that missing
- tag was what was messing with both sidebars! Who’d have thunk it!
Thanks again :-)
