My domain name expired and before I had a chance to renew it, someone bought it. So I had to purchase a new domain. Now my older blog articles are still showing up under the old domain in the search engines and on old links how to I route my articles to the new url?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Howdy,

Regarding the search engines, if you had previously setup Google Webmaster Tools on your old domain, you can use that to indicate to Google that you’ve changed domain names. Otherwise, it is simply a matter of time until their crawlers have noticed the change and update their search results.

In terms of updating your site to change the URL, you can see a list of all posts that mention your old domain name here: https://inspirewilddotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?s=inspirewild.com&post_status=all&post_type=post&action=-1&m=0&cat=0&paged=1&mode=list&action2=-1

You can go through those to update the URLs.

If you have any other questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!

Well then can you tell me how to change it with the google tool? I went to the google page and there are no instructions. There is an empty bar with an example below full looks like <meta>?…thenabunchofgarble.

What do I do with this and how do I change it. WordPress is very frustrating. You tell me where to go, but you dont tell me what to do when I get there and how to fix this. You just assume I am a programmer. Which most of us who use wordpress are not. Can you assist me or do I have to repost my blog somewhere else?

  • Hi,

My apologies. Since I don’t have access to your Google account, I’m not sure what you would see or not, so I don’t want to give more confusing information about suggesting a course of action that might not be possible for you.

Searching on Google, I found this support page from Google Webmaster Tools that may be helpful if you had already setup Google Webmaster Tools: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106?hl=en

If you hadn’t previously set it up, since you don’t have access to the older domain, you won’t be able to verify the older domain, so we can’t do that step. If that’s the case, we simply have to wait for Google to realize your site has moved (which would be the same no matter what platform or host your blog is using).

Regarding updating the links on your blog to other pages on your older domain, visit the list of posts containing mention to your old domain https://inspirewilddotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?s=inspirewild.com&post_status=all&post_type=post&action=-1&m=0&cat=0&paged=1&mode=list&action2=-1

Edit each post and find where it links to the previous domain. For example, on this particular post, click on the link and click the link icon in the tool bar. Then edit the address to the new domain and save the page.

Here is a slideshow of those steps for that post: https://cloudup.com/cZvUP7gJUOt

Again, I’m sorry for not providing enough information for you. If there is anything else I can help you with or questions I can answer, please let me know.
