  I received an email stating my password was changed

  Correct account: Yes

  Hi there –

  Thanks for writing to us. Somebody would also need access to your email account in order to confirm that password change.
  
  The best course of action now, is to update both your email account password and your WordPress.com account password to something new (complex and unique). Then I’d suggest enabling 2 factor authentication on each account. Here’s how you do that from our end of things:

  Your email provider should have some documentation on how to set that up for them too.
