Someone else has the domain I want but they're not using it.

Hi, a friend and I would like to start up a blog called Cut Your Hair, so we thought cutyourhair.wordpress.com would be a sensible URL. Unfortunately someone else already has that domain name. But they’re not using it! All they have is the first ‘test’ blog that most self-respecting bloggers promptly delete before embarking upon a wondrous blogging career. Worse still this goes back as far as 2007!
I’ve commented asking if I can have the domain but I doubt they’ll reply, they probably won’t even receive the comment. Would it be possible for you to e-mail them at the e-mail address you had for them in 2007? Or, is there any way we can re-adopt this URL back from them if we get no responses from them?

There is no rule that anyone who registers a WordPress.com blog must use it and Staff do no snatch back unused blogs. Provided comments are open and/or contact information is provided on the blog you can contact the blogger and ask them to transfer it to you; otherwise, you can’t use it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
Be aware that you can purchase your own domain name via a domain mapping upgrade and then it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain URL is. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

No. Staff will not violate that blogger privacy or yours either.

I wouldn’t consider it a violation of my privacy to be contacted by WordPress in that situation. I wasn’t asking for usage rules or snatching back so much as some human decency and common sense, and fortunately the commenter has received my comment and has agreed to relinquish the domain. She’s going to delete it and hopefully that will free up the domain again, otherwise I might be back here pleading for more info.

Oh dear. OK thanks for the quick response, that could have been fatal.
So is the best way for her to invite me to be an administrator and then remove herself as one?
Am I right in thinking that this will protect her password and details etc because all of this is attached to the blogger’s account rather than the blog? -
