Someone is trying to log in as me

    I am getting numerous email messages that someone is seeking to change my WordPress.com password. I did not request that it be changed. I assume, therefore, that someone is trying to break into my account. Is there a way to trace who this is? Thanks.

    If someone is requesting your password reset, they know your user name and/or email address.

    The good news is that as long as they don’t have access to your email account, they won’t be able to make the change.

    This being said, it sounds like it is a good time to change your email password and WordPress.com password – just to be safe.

    If you don’t already have Two Step Authentication on your account, I would consider that, too.

    You could also change the email address associated with your account.

    Is there a way to trace who this is?

    I don’t know whether or not this can be traced. For that, I’ll let staff answer (tagging this thread for their review), and they’ll also provide anything additional that I may have missed here. (Thanks, Staff!).

    Hi andrewperrin,

    If you are receiving password reset emails, this means someone knows your username or email address but there is no way for us to see who that is.

    @christinemaze has already mentioned some great suggestions for helping to maintain the security of your account. You may want to consider these options for both your WordPress.com account and email account:

    Two step authentication: https://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/

    Two step authentication requires you to ‘approve’ the login to your account with a mobile device — either using an app or an SMS code sent to your device.

    Change your password to a ‘strong’ password: https://en.support.wordpress.com/selecting-a-strong-password/
