Someone trying to take my domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

    Yesterday I got a mail from a person named Matt Fung who’s claiming that he is looking after the Asian Domain Registration Service in China. He says that he was approached by a client by the name “CreTang Company” who wanted to register sochoindiasocho. My domain name is sochoindiasocho.com. Matt wanted to check with me whether I had authorized the company to register the domain. I replied with negative. Thereafter, this is what I receive from the other end:
    Dear Sumit Roy,

    Thanks for your confirmation. As soon as receiving the application of “CreTang Company”, we checked and found “sochoindiasocho” is your company’s using name and brand. We are concerned that your brand name might be affected negatively by their applications, this is why we informed you. following Network Brand and domain names are applied by “CreTang Company”:
    Net Brand: sochoindiasocho
    Domain Names:
    “sochoindiasocho.cn
    sochoindiasocho.com.cn
    sochoindiasocho.net.cn
    sochoindiasocho.org.cn
    sochoindiasocho.cn.com
    sochoindiasocho.asia
    sochoindiasocho.in
    sochoindiasocho.co.in
    sochoindiasocho.hk
    sochoindiasocho.com.hk
    sochoindiasocho.tw
    sochoindiasocho.com.tw
    sochoindiasocho.中国

    You know that the domain names registration is open in the world, “CreTang Company” also has the right to apply for the available domain names. But you have the preferential rights to register them.

    At present, we haven’t passed their application, we need your opinion. If your company consider these names of importance to your company’s business or interest, I suggest that your company register these names first so as to avoid confusion or speculation. Of course, If you don’t want to protect your intellectual property rights, then my suggestion is your company give up these names so that we can finish registering for them as per our duty. Please give me your company’s decision as soon as possible in order to handle this issue better.
    Have a nice day.
    Best Regards,

    Matt Fung
    Senior Adviser Manager

    Hi,
    a company I work for had an identical email from Matt Fung yesterday saying that the “CreTang Company” were trying to register their domain name. I suspect this is ‘Matt Fung’ trying to make you use him to register all the different variations of your domain. I’d say it is highly unlikely that even if they do register those domain names they will use them for anything, and as you have .com already I would only register any others if you think it will be of use to you (and don’t use Matt Fung to do it!)

    Roguelobster wins the internet. This is a clever scam.

    Hi there.

    I see you chatted with my colleague, Pam, about this via live chat and I wanted to reconfirm that those emails can be safely ignored here also. If you search online, you’ll find numerous reports from people receiving similar messages regarding Chinese domains, here are some examples:

    * http://squelchdesign.com/web-design-newbury/chinese-domain-name-registration-scams/

    * http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/spot-chinese-domain-name-scam/

    * http://www.europeandomaincentre.com/pages/news-room/domain-management-news/hey!-got-an-email-from-china-domain-name-registration-center-asian-domain-registration-service-in-china-the-department-of-registration-service-in-china-etc.#.VSZRUhPF-OJ

    The fact is that no one will be able to register your domain while it’s active on your account, it belongs to you. It will be possible for people to register other available domains, such as sochoindiasocho.cn, sochoindiasocho.gov, sochoindiasocho.br etc. However, it’s not necessary to own every single variation of your domain’s name.

    Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any extra questions.
