someone's claiming my url

    I just got this message today, not sure what to make of it…

    “Hi- this is a lovely blog and I am so sorry to write about this buy my laywer has been bugging me for ages and has asked me to find out if you are ending it any time soon? The terms and logo DIY Baby were trademarked about 3 or 4 years ago – registered and protected. Im in the process of suing someone who has illegally registered diybaby.com and he has asked me to tie up lose ends.
    I realise you wouldnt have though that My DIY Baby would be close- but its actually ‘in competition’ (even though I know you werent doing anything of the sort- just writing a blog about your journey) But I help single women, lesbian and infertile couples find a sperm donor to become a parent- over 5000 donorss registered to do that worldwide- for free- AI only- and so many use the search string ‘DIY Baby’ to find my sites.
    Could you let me know?
    Many thanks and congrats on your baby!
    Em

    I haven’t updated my blog in a while, but I’m not keen on giving up my URL, especially if some semi-literate person is trying to wrest it from me. Anyone know what the protocol is here? And if it’s legit, what if I decide to let my domain lapse and go back to wordpress.mydiybaby.com? How far does such a copyright extend?

    I think you misunderstood. I wasnt asking for your domain or for you to remove your blog.

    I was asking if you were continuing the blog or if it has ended.

    The terms ‘DIY Baby’ are trademarked and protected – so of course anything that comes up under DIY Baby is flagged by my lawyer who is at the moment trying to sort out a mess our hosting company got us into – the domain diybaby.com lapsed and wasnt transferred back as promised- the domain company breached our contract. So while he is sorting it out he is looking at any other potential trademark infringements.

    I thought I had approached you with a positive spirit- just trying to get information about your blog. I wondered why you hadnt written back to me.

    I am not some semi-literate person trying to wrest it from you. Far from it. I do not want your domain, I was simply asking for information to pass on to my lawyer.

    Thank you

    mydiybaby,
    It sounds to me like a legitimate offer to purchase a domain. I don’t think you need to involve staff, just decide if you want to keep the name or sell it!

    @mydiybaby,

    Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer – but it sounds like they want to take your site down and want the info to have their lawyer bust your chops one way or another – I don’t see any offer to buy – they can’t do a DMCA take down since you have all original content –

    The they are trying to intimidate you and want contact info to serve papers – I don’t have any thoughts on what to do – they are a bit of a jerk as they don’t seem to know when the “copyright” was done – I know when my domain was registered so why they lost the “copyright” start date amazes me.
