Something changed – not able to add a new post to an existing menu

  • Unknown's avatar

    Something seems to have recently changed. I have always been able to add a new post to one of the menus I have created by selecting Appearance / Menus and then adding the new post to a list on the right and then positioning the new post where I wanted it.

    When I select Appearance / Menus now, it does not look anywhere near the same. I can also not determine how to add a new post to a menu.

    Suggestions?

    Hi rwkoehler1952

    Here is the support document that will help you to know how to add post to your menu:
    https://wordpress.com/support/menus/#add-menu-items

    If you also tried the same and still was not able to add a post to the menu, can you please add the screenshot of the same. To know more about how to add a screenshot please refer to the link below:

    Hope this helps.

    I found the “Add Items” option and I can select the new post that I just made. However, now in order to get this post into the correct sub-menu, the only way I see is to keep selecting the ^ (move up) arrow multiple times until I reach the sub-menu I want. I have hundreds of menus, sub-menus and posts which I have to go through one by one in order to get the new post in the correct position.

    There has got to be an easier way to do this. With the previous version, I was able to add the new post and it would place it at the bottom of the list of menu items. Then I could click and hold the new item and drag it up to the place where I wanted it.

    What happened to the old screen? I would send you a screen print of it … but it no longer exists!

    @wkoehler1952,

    With the previous version, I was able to add the new post and it would place it at the bottom of the list of menu items. Then I could click and hold the new item and drag it up to the place where I wanted it.

    Whether at the Menus page in the Customizer (via Calypso or WP-Admin), or at the WP-Admin Menus page, I find that it’s still possible, and easy, to add items and drag and drop them as you’ve described.

    However, I think the disconcerting change you’ve described is due to the recent implementation of what WordPress.com called “Unified Navigation.” WordPress.com has recently combined the Calypso and WP-Admin sidebars into one, as described in the forum topic Unified Navigation. The damage can be partially remedied by choosing the “Show advanced dashboard pages” at Account Settings > Dashboard Appearance, as described in the Dashboard Appearance section of the Account Settings support page.

    Excellent suggestion. When I finally found and changed that “Show advanced dashboard pages”, I am now able to see that old screen that I was used to seeing, and I can now easily add a new post to my menus. Thank you very much.
