Sorbet theme – problem with my header icons

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

    I recently switched to the Sorbet theme, but I am having an issue with the icons (menu/widget/social media/search) that are featured on the header.

    I used the following code to keep the “menu” bar open :

    #site-title a {
    display: block;
    }

    But then I realized it prevented me from clicking on any of the 3 other icons… So I removed the code from my CSS, and it now seems that all of the icons (including the menu) are unclickable…

    Here is my blog : miettesdevoyage.com

    Thanks so much for your help!

    Oh and the weirdest part is that the icons don’t seem to be locked when I am on customizing mode, I can actually click on them and see the dropdown bar appear…

    Hi, Can you explain a little further what you are wanting to achieve? I notice when I go to your site that the menu shows by default, but at narrower screen sizes/browser window settings (755px wide and narrower) the small mobile menu displays open, which puts your content way down on the page. Are you wanting the menu to display for wider settings, but revert to the original design on narrower screens?

    I’m not having any issues clicking on the other icons at top right.

    Hello and thank you for your answer!

    Ideally, I’d like to have my “Menu” showing by default, and the 2 other genericons (social media + search) rolling when clicked on.

    On my end, the menu is indeed showing, but the two other genericons don’t open anymore when I click on them … If I can’t solve this problem, I’d rather go back to the initial Sorbet settings (no menu open by default). Thing is, when I delete the code I inserted (see above), the 3 genericons become “unclickable”…

    Not really sure what I got myself into, here… :)

    I see what you mean about the display on a narrower screen, I just checked on my phone. I think I either need to have a shorter menu, or I need to go back to the original setting and have no menu showing by default.

    Well, we can use a media query to limit the display of the menu to 755px and wider. Change your first rule into this and then try things again on your phone:

    @media screen and (min-width: 756px) {
    .panel#menu-toggle-nav{
    	display:block
    }
    }

    On the other icon issues, I’ve tried your site in Safari, Chrome and Firefox and on all of them if I click on the social or search icon, they both work. I also clicked on all the social icons and they work as well. When I click on the social or search icon, the menu does disappear and is replaced by the others and I then have to click the menu icon to get back to the menu.

    I assume you are wanting the menu to show and the social or search section to show below it?

    So I removed a few items from the menu bar which I felt didn’t really work out with the new design anyway. I used the media query code and it didn’t seem to change anything, but it’s ok now that the menu is shorter.

    Actually you are right the icons didn’t work only on one particular location (PC at work), but they all work on my phone and my mac, thanks for checking too! It doesn’t really bother me that the menu bar is replaced by the other bars.

    Thank you so much for the quick answers and for helping a newbie! :)

    You are welcome. Just for reference, what browser and browser version are you using at work?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am using Mozilla Firefox, not really sure which version though. I also checked my blog using Internet Explorer 8, well that was an even bigger mess!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ah yes, IE8 and lower can definitely be a problem. There is so much of current web standards that they don’t support. Firefox though should work just fine. I’m on 32.0.2 and all is good.

    After downloading Chrome on my work computer, I realized that the same problem is happening. Then I suppose it has nothing to do with the browser I am using and is caused by my PC, which is a DELL!

    Hmmm, given I’m having no issues, and you are not having issues on your personal computer, I’m wondering if there is perhaps firewall settings at on your work network that are causing the issue. We have seen this in the past where a corporate firewall prevents visiting certain sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.
