sorry that website has already been used problem
-
I changed the name of my blog to Metro-Chicago Recruiting awhile ago, however, today when I tried to change the web address it says, Sorry, that site has already been used! I believe it’s confusing it with the current name on my blog. How do I go about correcting it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Do you mean that you tried to change the address to something like https://metro-chicagorecruiting.wordpress.com? If so, I think the responses from staff (rootjosh, and thatrobyn) in the topic Site Address – change name regarding the use of hyphens in URLs of WordPress.com sites vs. custom domains may be relevant.
-
I would like to change this: https://metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting.wordpress.com/about to https://metrochicagorecruiting.wordpress.com/about
Just want to correct the name. How do I change this? -
Hi there,
You will need to change your blog address to do that.
Here is the guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
Hope this helps!
-
I can’t change the web address connected to About, this is what it says: https://metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting.wordpress.com/about, I want it to say https://metrochicagorecruiting.wordpress.com/about
Every button I’ve clicked will not edit this address, I’ve changed everything else including the blog address.
-
I would like to change this: https://metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting.wordpress.com/about to https://metrochicagorecruiting.wordpress.com/about
These two URLs are for the “About” pages on two separate WordPress.com websites:
1. https://metrochicagorecruiting.wordpress.com/
2. https://metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting.wordpress.com/.
I put them in this order because the first of them has posts published February and March 2016, whereas the second has no published posts and only a default “About” page. Also the site https://metrochicagorecruiting.wordpress.com/ is linked to at the following locations:
a. your username at the left of each post in this thread
b. the bottom of your first post in this thread,
c. your forum profile, and
d. Mary Coogan’s LinkIn page, which I found via your Gravatar profile, at Websites > Company Website (link to a login redirect including the site address)Are both sites in the same account? It’s not clear why you’d want to change the address of the second site, to the first, but what you propose can not be accomplished. The address (URL) of a WordPress.com site, including any page on that site, can not be changed to the address (URL) of an existent WordPress.com site. Also, it is not possible to delete a WordPress.com site in order to “free” that address in order that it may be used on another site, at least not for two years after the site is delete. the Recycling Blog Addresses support page says:
Sites already deleted by their authors two or more years ago may become available again, if they present no username or other technical conflicts.
-
Yes, both sites are in the same account, I changed the first website url from metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting to metrochicagorecruiting, I don’t want that first name anymore. I’m trying to delete that forever, not use it on another site.
The reason I changed the name was because I wanted my business to just be a recruiting company, not a staffing and recruiting company, when I do a Google search it still says About/metrochicagorecruiting – metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting
-
Thanks for that additional information.
I changed the first website url from metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting to metrochicagorecruiting, I don’t want that first name anymore.
You may delete the site. See the Delete Site support page, but please note the introductory warning and consider the less drastic alternatives listed near the top of the page. You may also retain the original site, to perhaps use for testing, drafting, etc., and leave it inactive, setting its visibility to private. See the Privacy Settings support page.
If you haven’t already done so, I strongly suggest you consider purchasing a Site Redirect.
If relevant, see also the Moving Your Subscribers support page. WordPress.com staff can move your subscribers for you. Add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.
-
when I do a Google search it still says About/metrochicagorecruiting – metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting
The Google search results won’t change immediately, but inactivating the original site by making it private and purchasing the Site Redirect upgrade will help to expedite the process.
I’m not sure whether deleting the site would interfere with the Site Redirect, so I’m going to call for staff attention. Please wait for staff to respond.

Hi @metrochicagorecruiting (and thanks everyone for your help here.)
I just wanted to add that, if you’d like, you can redirect the old address to the new one. That way if anyone clicks on a Google search result for the old site, they’ll automatically be sent to the new one. That will also give Google a signal to update its links.
I’d recommend that option. More details here:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/Otherwise you can just delete the old site and wait to re-gain presence in search engines.
-
@ supernovia,
I just wanted to add that
Thanks. Please note that I’d suggested the Site Redirect twice already.
-
@ supernovia,
The reason I added the tag calling for staff attention was because:
I’m not sure whether deleting the site would interfere with the Site Redirect, so I’m going to call for staff attention. Please wait for staff to respond.
I also thought the member might need help moving subscribers.

No worries. : -)
A site redirect will not work on a deleted site.
Thanks! I thought that was the case, but wasn’t sure.

A site redirect will not work on a deleted site.
So will site redirect work on an empty site, the content of which was transferred elsewhere by either a. changing the site address, or b. transferring the site to another account?
-
@ supernovia,
I find that the Change a Blog Address support page contains an image which includes a warning about not deleting the site if you wish to “transfer traffic from the old site” with the Site Redirect upgrade, but I’ve yet found no such warning oroviso in the Site Redirect support page. If you’ve changed your blog address, isn’t there a good chance that you’ve deleted the original address afterward, missing the fine print warning during the process?
-
So will site redirect work on an empty site…?
In the case at hand, the site https://metrochicagostaffingandrecruiting.wordpress.com/, which we’ve recommended purchasing a site redirect for, appears to be a virtually empty site, having only a default “About” page and no published posts.
-
@musicdoc1 users will not be be able to add a site redirect to a deleted site, and they won’t be able to delete a site with a redirect still on it.
The redirect will work just fine on an empty site though, as long as the URLs on the new site match the ones the old site used to have.
