"Sorry, this comment could not be posted" error

@doughuffman – There isn’t a way to merge forum threads, but I can certainly help you with this here. Third-party cookies allow you to stay logged in to your WordPress.com account even when the site you’re on is using a custom domain (such as wattsupwiththat.com). For your security, if you don’t want to enable third-party cookies globally you can make an exception for specific sites hosted on WordPress.com.

So that is the cause of the error, “Sorry, this comment could not be posted?” Did WP know this when the coding change was made, why not notify the users?

I had been happily using WP for a while.

    Thank you for your attention.

Third-party cookies have always been required in this case — there wasn’t a recent change related to that. If you have third-party cookies enabled and you still run into that error, the following details will help me investigate it further for you:

    (1) The link to a blog post where you continue to get the error while commenting

    (2) The exact steps you take when you try to leave the comment (including how you logged in to your account before commenting)

I have been doing some more investigating
I went to control panel-internet properties-cookies and enabled the ones in particular that I have a problem with. As it turns out they are only the .com blogs not the wordpress.com I ‘allowed’ in particular one because the setting in tools-allowing 3rd party still didn’t make any difference and as it turns out ‘allowing’ in the Internet Properties didn’t either Sooooo! Upon further checking I found out that when I click on the email notification and go to the post…. if I make a comment I have the problem with ‘sorry cannot post comment’ HOWEVER
If I go to the blogs’ home page before commenting I get the WordPress bar across the top and then I can go back to the blog I want to comment on and it accepts me doing so! This is what I will do even though it’s another step to do this.
Perhaps this information helps you in correcting the issue though. One of the blogs this happens on is up near the beginning of this thread.. agratefulman……… Diane

Under this username account I find that I am unable to comment on this post http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2014/03/20/mixcloud-update/ although the comments are open. So timethief told me to post into this thread.

lilmaouz and I have worked through all possible browser and connectivity related issues in another thread.

I even don’t see the admin bar when I visit your site … By the way, on other sites, I see the admin bar… (on butterpear’s blog, for instance, no prob)

    timethief said:

Right! What that points to is this difference:
This blog does not have a domain mapping upgrade http://butterpearblog.wordpress.com/
My blog does have a domain mapping upgrade and this is making me even more and more unhappy by the minute.

Will you please examine the possibility that sites on their own domains may be the ones that people cannot post comments to?

For anyone interested see my comment May 23.. 4:32 pm I have found that this ‘sorry comment cannot be posted’ happens on the .com blogs not the wordpress.com ones… at least for me. After much researching my fix at least until perhaps a permanent one is found by WP is this…
    1. when receiving the notification and wanting to make a comment ..click comment or title or whatever to take you to the post you want
    2. Before trying to make a comment go to top of page and click on either the ‘home’ or ‘about’ or another tab… When you do, you will find that the WordPress bar appears at the top
    3. Go and make your comment and you will not get the ‘sorry comment cannot be posted…. and comment WILL be updated

Hope this helps some others of you who have had this frustration. Diane

    Hello, Diane.
Thank you very much for that clear explanation.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me.
Another thing I noticed is that I can’t “follow” TT’s blog, using the sidebar button.
And wherever I click does not make any admin bar become visible.

wp.com, wordpress.com, gravatar.com, and of course onecoolsitebloggingtips.com are set as trusted site
I’ve also added them in allowed xss crossites
Firefox and flashplayer are up to date.
And, I will never ever put google in my trusted sites (if that’s the issue, no way!)

At last, I would say that asking people to add security exceptions and disable all add-ons just to make it possible commenting on a friend’s blog is not very user friendly!

  • Unknown's avatar

to lilmaouz I went to the blog in question of yours’ and it worked for me. I clicked on ‘about’ and it brought up the wp bar at top…

I noticed when I was testing it sometimes took trying a couple of tabs ..ie about and then if that doesn’t work try another one or two of the tabs at top. just a thought… Diane

    Hi, Diane,
Thank you for the extra quick tip!
    I’ve tried everything you suggested.
Unfortunately, with no result so far.
I’ve also checked my firewall, just in case.
Not any problem over there, apparently.
I’ve added wordpress.org in my trusted sites too.
Must be a google issue (My friend is called duckduckgo ;)
The conclusion is that I cannot join my wp friends anymore
Bad day (one more). I’m french, and I find this all so difficult.
Anyway, thank you again for your kindness. Good day to you!

  • Unknown's avatar

lilmaouz…. I know you likely don’t want any more suggestions… but I did an experiment re ‘following the blog in question that you wanted to TT’s Since my husband is not a wordpress user even I clicked on her blog and followed re the ‘follow’ button in lower left corner that appears… not on her sidebar… and it updated to follow her.
Regarding the commenting that perplexes me… the only other thing I did as I stated further up is to ‘allow’ the url of the blogs I was having trouble with when I went to Control panel….. ‘put’ in cookies to search …got internet properties and pasted the copied url …in your case TT’s url into where you get the option to block or allow…

I don’t mean to confuse you further…. you probably have already read what I wrote…. and maybe you just want to ‘give in’ but you should at least be able to ‘follow’ at least according to my experiment…

Sorry to add any confusion ..just ignore if you want… Diane

    Hello, Diane!
I certainly will never ignore a person who takes some of her time to help me solve the issue I encounter.
The extra info about “follow blog via sidebar” has been given as it could (maybe) help staff to see what’s wrong on my side.
I’m using wp.com since 99, my main blog was a tech blog, I’ve been the first mod for the fr community
    (I’m not a newbie ;)
I left for some good reasons and deleted the whole stuff, but this “comment” issue is a bit frustrating…
Now maxthon could become my default browser since he let me post my comment-test quite easily! YESS!
By the way, you helped much more than the staff, thanks a million for all your efforts! I wish you a very nice day :)

    oops! since 2009 ^^ sorry :D

You’re quite welcome…. You have a nice day also… the sun and warmth has been here now for three days…. summer is coming!… Diane

    @timethief

Will you please examine the possibility that sites on their own domains may be the ones that people cannot post comments to?

When users have trouble with sites using custom domains, it points to third-party cookies being disabled in the browser. (Those cookies are what allow users to stay logged in while on sites with custom domains.) If you run into a case that seems to be caused by something else, please let me know.

    @lilmaoz –

It sounds like you found a way around the comment issue, but if it continues to be a problem please take a look at this support page:

Preview Problems and Third Party Cookies

In the “Checking your browser…” section near the top of the page, it will tell you if third-party cookies are enabled in your browser. (Third-party cookies need to be enabled on WordPress.com sites for you to stay logged in, specifically on WordPress.com sites using a custom domain.)

If you have any other questions about that, please let me know.

  • Unknown's avatar

rachelmcr…Not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you saying that if the ‘custom domain’ sites which have .com in their url instead of wordpress.com Do not have their 3rd party cookies enabled ..then those who go to read their blog cannot??

My 3rd party cookies are enabled and I even put the sites on ‘allowed’ in the internet properties but UNLESS when I go to read their post, I first select another post such as their ‘home’ or ‘about’ one and the wordpress bar appears at the top… and then go to the current post; I cannot leave a comment without the ‘sorry your comment….etc.
In any case I will just do this until their is a fix by WP… Diane

    Hello, Rachel, Diane, and everyone!
I went back to firefox 21.0 (*) with third party cookies enabled, and so (in safe mode) I was able to leave a msg. Thank you.
(* which doesn’t make use of flash the same way, apparently)
I used the same settings with the latest version (erased now) so I don’t think that was my problem, trying to comment on TT’s blog.
Btw, adding wp.com, wordpress.com or whatever in trusted sites (as explained on wp.com support pages) didn’t help, in this case (with the latest version that has been erased, since)
No need of all this with the version I use now, so I guess a developper might easily find the source of this trouble (something in flash I guess)
I can’t explain better (in english), sorry for that. I wish you all a nice day :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know if someone is still concerned but just in case I have a screenshot

  • Unknown's avatar

Diane, the third-party cookie settings are related to the person who is visiting the blog — they aren’t anything that the blog owner can control from their end. The behavior you described sounds odd, though (where you have to go to another page on the blog before being able to comment on the post.) You mentioned that you enabled third party cookies and put the sites on ‘allowed’ in the internet properties. Can you describe exactly how you are managing those settings (what you click on to get to those settings) and what options you have selected or entered there?

@lilmaouz – Thanks for sending that screenshot. Those settings are specifically related to the NoScript browser extension, which control Javascript settings. That won’t change how third-party cookies work in your browser. You can find links to the instructions for changing third-party cookies in Firefox and other browsers on this page: Preview Problems and Third Party Cookies

    Hi, Rachel,
I know how it works, thanks ^^ that was not the meaning :D
If it doesn’t make any difference that with noscript and abp full enabled I can still access the follow button on the french blog while I don’t see it on the english one, then I’m sorry, I won’t disturb anymore, I promise ;)
