Sorry to be a newbie, can some please explain TAGS?

    Apologies for being so newbie here folks, but I’m utterly confused by the function of tags (are simple tags the same thing?). The WordPress Help page suggests they are means of grouping together your own posts, but I thought they were a means of hopefully connecting with search engines and people browsing for content your blog might contain. What’s the difference to Keywords? Can someone please explain and perhaps give an example? I’ve managed to over-think this and gotten thoroughly bamboozled.
