Sorting Posts by using Pages
-
I’d like to find a way to sort my posts by using the pages at the top, to make it easier to access certain types of material.
For example, I may post frequently about news, stories, or personal updates. But I also post infrequently with project updates and links (think of it as a portfolio). I would like it to be easy to sort them by using something similar to the page tabs at the top.
Is this something that I would have to do through CSS? Or is there some other way to do it on WordPress? I’ve played around with categories, but I can’t seem to find what I want to do.
For an example of what I am going for visually, look at my current site: http://www.sunnysidesound.com
I’m thinking of switching over to wordpress instead of iWeb, but I know I need to learn and make my own CSS before I do so. I also want to make sure I can do everything I’d like to do.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We need a link to your blog. There are ways to do this, but it depends on which theme you are using.

ah yes, I’m using iWeb, and I have a privately set-up wordpress while I test the water.
I plan on converting my old posts over if and when I decide to change to WordPress. My wordpress only has some bare-bones posts for me to use a visual examples while I toy around.

There are several themes here that you can use a trick to put HTML links into the tabs. What you do is categorize your posts (news, stories, personal updates) and then you put links to those specific category pages in your top navigation using the “trick” in this blog post: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/ . Only the themes listed in the left hand column in that blog post work well with this trick.

I’ll also mention that the iNove theme allows you to choose whether the top navigation tabs link to pages or to categories. The downside is that you cannot do both although if you set it to link to the categories, then you can use the pages widget in the sidebar.

Hm. That does help some. I could probably work with iNove, if only I could re-order my categories in some way other than alphabetical.

If you use the “trick” in the post I referenced, you can set the order for the tabs at the top: http://support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/#order .
