Sorting posts into categories

    Hello,

First off I would like to say it is nice to have a community to seek help from.

I have a web blog where I post about different games.

I would like to have a step by step tutorial on how to sort these games into different categories.

For example adding a link to the template of my website such as NES Games or SNES games and have a A – Z directory to select each.

My website is as follows: esstentialperspective.wordpress.com

I am still quite knew to all this so a noob friendly explanation to go about all this would be most appreciative.

    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You Edit each post and, in the right-hand side where it says Category, you type in whatever category you want the post in. Then you hit Update. Do the same for all your posts.

You could also use the Quick Edit function on the dashboard Posts page to add categories to any of your posts. Click Quick Edit on any post and see how it works.

Is it possible to add a subcategory?

IE. If a user clicks on NES gaming on the main page they reach another webpage that offers links A-Z at the top.

Then once they select one they can see the list of games?

I would I go about implementing this?

Yes. Just create the main categories, then create the sub-categories. At the time of creation you can choose to make it a sub-category of a previously-existing category.

I have done so but now I noticed the subcategory appears on the main page.

I would like to be able to allow users to select gaming then have the option to click on the subcategory such as NES.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Ocean Mist is a very old (and retired) theme. I’d suggest you experiment with a newer theme. There was a time here on WordPress.com when many themes did not offer the option to display subcategories in the category widget!!!

If you feel that you cannot abandon Ocean Mist, then you might try adding a custom menu:

    or a custom menu widget:

    @ scenicperspective,

It sounds to me like you might want drop-down menus from buttons in the header area. If so, and if you want the menu items to include main categories and subcategories, and all (or some) to be links to posts, then Custom Menus is the way to go.
