space at beginning of blog

Until recently, I was able to type   at the top of my blog so I’d have a space before my first text. I think it looks nicer than all jumbled up. The last few days, even if I save draft after typing that code, it disappears. Any suggestions? My blog is http://www.thesedaysofmine.com Thanks for any help!

I’m sorry but I do not understand exactly where you mean. Aside from entering a Title and Tagline here > Settings > General which are need for search engine indexing but may be hidden on some themes, we can only enter text into posts or pages so I need you to clarify exactly what has changed for you. Have you changed themes?

To display code here, you need to paste it between backticks (see below Reply text field).

    You mean you typed this:
    <br />
That’s no way to add space. That’s the html for a line break: the post editor quite rightly considers it pointless when inserted before any line, so it gets removed when you switch to Visual. See here for stable solutions:

Formatting text pt. 1: blank lines, alignment, wrap-around, two columns

Sorry I wasn’t clearer: I type (ampersand nbsp semi-colon) at the top of my blog post before typing any text. I immediately “save draft” after typing in the code. If you look at today’s post:
    http://boonstoon.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/mums-11-8-2011-4-32-10-pm.jpg
You’ll see there’s no space above the sentence that begins: “scuse me”

    Compared to last Tuesday’s post:
    http://thesedaysofmine.com/page/7/
where there’s a space above the first sentence.

But I think I may have realized the problem, although I don’t understand it. We recently bought a new computer with Windows 7, and there must be an issue there. It appears that creating the space still works on my older computer…
    Sorry guys for the confusion.

@boonstoon – your first link you’ve given is to your image file’s attachment page, not your post.

In case it’s of any use, I get round this problem when it occurs by typing a dot for each line I want a space in and then changing the dot to the same colour as my background (white).

Well, I have no idea how that image file link got there! Anyway – here’s the link today’s post:
    http://thesedaysofmine.com/2011/11/14/sundae-says-please-and-thank-you/

I’ll try using your dot trick. Thanks!

@boonstoon: the nbsp isn’t a way to add space either. It’s the HTML entity for a non-breaking space between two words. When used alone, the editor will again consider it pointless and strip it out. Please study the post I linked to.

@absurdoldbird: That’s a well-known workaround but not a good one. The dots will show in your RSS feed, they’ll show in themes that display excerpts on the front page, they’ll show if one copy-pastes your text, and they’ll show for users (like me) who set their browser to display different colors than the original ones of the pages they visit.

All I know is the nbsp worked for me for months…..at the top of my post. And still does when I write my post on the older computer. But I’ll check out your link for more options. Thanks!

@Panos – that’s why I only use one dot per line. And as for them showing in feeds and copy pastes and display excerpts, for myself I really don’t mind. They’re only dots.
