Space between text and image??

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for looking at it, Dr Mike. In your test posts, I see NO spaces between the picture and the text, using Mozilla as my browser. However, I figured neither of us is blind so I decided to look at the posts in IE. Voila! The spaces are there. So it must be a browser display issue.

    At least now I know what the problem is. I’ll adjust the photos to include the space – even though I won’t see it.

    Hmm, that is strange as I don’t see the spacing either in Netscape 7.2. Even stranger is vspace and hspace were created as Netscape extentions way back when.

    Hmm, a quick Google search says that they’ve both been deprecated and that we should use the style=”padding” tags. Which of course we can’t since CSS style tags are stripped out now.

    I can think of a method of doing a search and replace method to get them in there as style tags. Much like the coding that we do here for the YouTube videos. (WP picks up on the [youtube=] tag and replaces it with the embeded tags that are needed.) I wonder if maybe we can convince staff into doing something like that. I don’t think we can get them to edit the CSS for the theme. They seem to want to stay away from stuff like that.

    What you said – is absolute greek to me :( Hopefully, you can explain it well enough to send thru feedback.

    It’s strange though that it works in IE. Microsoft was always big on not following the standards proposed by others.

    Hi Mike
    I just thought I’d let you know that the same thing happens to me that happened with Vivian here:
    I put the spacing into the html, but no space is there on the updated live page. Interestingly, even when I go into the pop-up image editor box, increase the spacing size, and see the space jump wider while viewing in that window, when I then go back and check, no space. This is in Mozilla Firefox browser.
    When I follow Vivian’s lead and check it in IE, my spacing is there.
    So’s ya know.

    Did anyone find a solution in for Firefox or st least the culprit of the problem? It’s the same in Safari, too.

    This used to bug me a lot too, because it would seem to me that it should be a default setting. Who wants the text jammed right smack up against the photo?

    The solution as it was pointed out to me in another thread was this:
    If the image is on the left, and text on the right, insert this code:
    alt=”YOURPHOTO.jpg” style=”margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px” />

    If the photo is on the right and the text to the left, insert this:
    alt=YOURPHOTO.jpg” style=”margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px” />

    Works for me, anyway. I just wish it were a default setting.

    This seems pretty active, so I’ll ask my question to all of your experts:

    Is it possible to embed a photo into your main page? Example say I have some very, very light, unobtrusive photos that I would like to have in the page so I could write over it. Is it possible to do that here at WordPress?

    I don’t have a clue how to so maybe (fingers-crossed) lettershometoyou, vivianpaige, timethief, (<–love the handle) Britgirl, cyanee, and drmike could assist me?

    Do you have css editing experience?
    Are your prepared to take the job on yourself?
    Have you purchased the css upgrade?

  • Unknown's avatar

    timethief,

    Thanks for the expedient response! I do have css experience albeit I am no “master” by any measure. I am prepared to take on the job myself. No, I have not purchased the upgrade, should I? Cheers!

    I’m not sure if this will help at all but I create my posts in dreamweaver and then just copy/paste them into the editor. Again not sure if it’ll help but it’s an idea. Also while i’m super new I use tables in the posts.

    @onemorecup
    The only way you can change the background behind your posts to an image is through css editing and you can’t do that without purchasing a css upgrade. (There is a preview function so you can play around with css and view the results. But any changes that you make in preview will not remain and cannot be seen by your readers so be sure to save them in a plain text editor.)

    Hey desdev and timethief:

    Thank you so much for your assistance. My significant other has been hounding me to get Dreamweaver insofar as she says, “…your writing takes 15 minutes, but your editing takes 2 or more hours.” I say, “…life’s tough being a perfectionist…” Anyway, I feel it’s incumbent upon a blogger to at least know the basics…if not more!

    timethief: There is a duplicate of this post; I don’t know how it happened but there are like 18-19 comments that are quite good. “Watermark” was the word I was looking for! Thanks again, both of you! Cheers!

    Can we please bug support to include in the FAQ the information on the margin problem?
