space problem

as i noticed i am using up a lot of space with the uploaded images, i decided to rescale them. oddly enough as i am rescaling and i see images dropping form 6 or 7 mb to 1 or 2 mb, the used space procent grows. why is that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    HI Mihpop,

Have you deleted your older 6/7mb images from your sites media folder?
If you have, then the amount of free space available may not have updated yet. You could try logging out for a short period and logging back in to reload your blog in your browser.

I hope this helps, If not let me know!

i did not delete them. i have scaled them. and for example a photo that had 7mb before scaling now has 2. however that does not reflect in the procent of space usage. i saw it go up immediately after i took this action. if when i started it was something like 1673 mb used, it is now 1813 mb. which is very annoying really and completely absurd.

Scaling an image inside WordPress.COM Media Library does not reduce anything – you need to delete to original image from the Media Library (and probably the scaled derivatives you have made) – then upload new images that you have scaled outside on your PC (or other method (web) )

Scaling inside WordPress.COM just makes a new version of the image and leaves the old image intact

Which means it actually uses up more space (as you’ve seen) as both the original AND the resized image gets saved.

pfff. i thought of that, but since it does not show two saved images i thought it was not the case. it would have been way easier to just save the latest version. i will try to delete and upload again tho i will waste some time. thank you for the clarifications.

images dropping form 6 or 7 mb

That is way large for the internet – makes your site load slow and irritate most visitors (and as you also found out, burns storage space quickly

indeed. i used a better camera in taking my last photos than my usual one and didnt realize the quality was way better until i uploaded them.

It’s strange that the original images aren’t visible in your media folder. Mine were when I edited some of my images.

I scale almost everything now & edit to only a few pictures – when I started I just put everything up on a picture site – burned through 75% of the storage in 3 days of shooting.

Now I scale and if a friend wants a better image they can email me and I will send them the larger original image – the only exception was a few weeks ago and I was taking pictures for our Public Affairs Dept. and I uploaded the raw images (3.3MB average) but I also edited aggressively so 100 images turned into 15 uploaded – the full size was to make it easier for the publications folks to just download the pictures – set up in a gallery so they could preview things and only grab the ones they liked and needed

yeah. that would make sense. it would save a loooooot of work if i could just delete those.

so what would be a good size for resizing? a good image with as little space?

Most themes can’t display image any bigger than 1200 pixels wide, so unless you specifically want people to be able to download hi-res images, it’s a waste to upload images any wider than, say 1500 pixels.

You can also use a tool like JPEGMini (Google it) to further trim your image file sizes without any noticeable loss in quality to save even more space.

But all this has to be done before you upload an image to the media library. Also see: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Some image editing programs like Gimp allow you to also compress images when exporting (saving as jpg) to save space –
