spacer.gif

The response I received from jerrysarcastic was not helpful.

When I do a search on ‘spacer.gif’ in MEDIA, I get one result:
(I’d include a snapshot of the screen – if I could)

The ‘spacer.gif’ I’ve been using since 2015 is this one: https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif

But it’s nowhere to be found. And what’s more horrifying is that ‘https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif’ appears to be a valid URL (i.e., I’m seeing a graphic).

    MY QUESTIONS ARE THESE:
    (1) Why does ‘spacer.gif’ not show up in MEDIA – only ‘spacer-e1464988108999.gif’
    (2) If ‘https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif’ IS valid why is it suddenly appearing in my POSTS/PAGES as a broken link? (Again. I’d include a snapshot if I could)

You can see this is action (or non-action) here: https://m2labs.wordpress.com/2021/10/01/the-hanged-man-sweet-surrender/

Scroll down to the very bottom of the Post. Right under the ‘Hopelessness’ quote but before the purple M – is a BROKEN LINK.

    What’s going on here?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • I’m not sure I understand? If I visit your page linked above I do not see any broken links. Here is what I see.

You see something different from what I see if you visit https://m2labs.wordpress.com/2021/10/01/the-hanged-man-sweet-surrender/ on your end?

If so can you describe what you are seeing? Also, do you see the same thing if you go to this direct link? https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif?w=10&h=20

Also what do you see at this link? https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif

    Thanks for the additional info!

  • Also I see you have posted here as well: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/spacer-gif/

Please avoid opening duplicate threads in the future. You do not get a different answer or faster help by asking a different question, so multiple requests like this just add to our confusion.

If you can keep everything within one post it allows us to see the full conversation and what was tried before/what should be tried next so we do not dupicate our efforts as we look into this.

    Thanks!

I DO NOT get the same image at

    The Hanged Man: Sweet Surrender

    that you do (above).

I am still seeing a BROKEN link underneath the orange-colored text at the bottom of the Post:

And here’s the code within that Post for the space.gif

I’ve used this code on every single Page and Post since 2015. Everything looked fine last Friday when I did the Oct 1 Post.

When I search MEDIA for “spacer” this is all I get:

I get 0 results when searching for “spacer.gif”.

oops – the html code did not show up in that last comment. My mistake.

    Let’s try it this way:

  • Hmm… that does not look like a broken link exactly. I see in the dimensions for the HTML it’s 10px by 20px, and it looks like some kind of 10x20px “box” is being drawn around it on your end. I definitely don’t see that.

I noticed you are using Firefox and I’m thinking that it may be where the issue is coming from.

As a test can you visit https://m2labs.wordpress.com/2021/10/01/the-hanged-man-sweet-surrender/ using another browser like Chrome or Internet Explorer instead? Does it show the same there as well?

Also, it’s no longer recommended to use transparent GIFs to create a spacer. You used to have to do that but there are other ways you may want to try instead. Have you considered this code instead of your GIF? It will add a blank linespace using HTML only, no graphics file needed.

    Thanks for the additional info!

I will try updating Firefox to see if that fixes the issue.

I have one more question though, why do I not see “spacer.gif” in MEDIA?
Why do I just see “spacer-e1464988108999.gif” – which by the way I never created OR uploaded. It appears to be a graphic that created itself out of thin air…

I can use CSS instead of the graphic. I wasn’t using CSS at all years back so I just continued to incorporate the transparent gif.

Won’t be able to go back and fix all the hundreds of Posts I’ve published – unless I’m bored to death and have nothing better to do…

    Hi there!

It’s odd indeed that the spacer.gif file doesn’t show up when you search for it. However, you shouldn’t have to update the old posts where this is already inserted because the actual file is still there and it loads at https://m2labs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/spacer.gif

I was able to open the file using Firefox on my end too. So whatever the reason is that causes you to see a block box instead of the actual file seems to be specific to your browser. Perhaps clearing the browser cache will fix it?

Here’s how to clear your browser cache: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Yes, I cleared cache and updated Firefox. Issue not only continues but this morning some of the transparent gifs were appearing as broken links – mainly on Pages. I even searched for any virus that may cause this to happen (at my end) and came up with nothing.

I even tried uploading another spacer.gif with a new name and it made no difference. I have no idea what’s going on. I give up.

I rewrote the html on the Pages that were affected by the broken link syndrome and in future will avoid using transparent gifs altogether. I’ll use CSS instead…

  • Have you tried looking for just “spacer” ? I wonder if the dot is causing trouble.

And yeah, I would recommend moving away from spacer.gifs anyway — they’re not terrible accessible, and CSS has come a long way since spacer gifs were a regular thing. You can also use a block for your signature if you’d like, so you don’t have to style it every time. :)

    Hoping this helps!

Yes I searched on just “spacer”.

Don’t care for blocks. Will stick with CSS.

    Thanks.
