spacing after columns block
-
Hi,
I have been dabbling with the columns block. However, I notice that there is an excessive amount of space between the columns block and the following block on the rendered page.
I am using the Independent Publisher 2 theme.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Brian

Hi Brian,
I’ve never noticed anything like what you describe with the columns block, so this likely has to do with exactly what you have added inside that block. Can you give a link to the post or page in question so I can have a look?

Thanks for the link! I had a look and you are right that the spacing before and after the columns block is bigger than between paragraphs. This however is expected behavior.
if you’d like to decrease it, we might be able to help you out with some custom CSS code. For that, I suggest you reach out to us via live chat (https://wordpress.com/help/contact) and we can further discuss it.

Hi,
the link shows an example of attempting to use columns block. There are 4 columns blocks near the beginning. They are followed by the same content, as they are currently implemented, i.e. not using column blocks. Ignore the rest of the page.
My observations are:
it is not apparent to me how (or if) you can change column widths after you have populated one or more columns
do not understand why text is not vertically aligned with the image
too much white space between blocks, as previously mentioned.

The width of the columns is automatic and it will adjust to the content inside the column. The overall width of the column will depend on how many columns did you chose to display and your theme layout.
do not understand why text is not vertically aligned with the image
That’s because the text has more space on top than what’s on the image. For the kind of list, it would be best to try a block called “Media&Text” instead of Columns.

Re width of columns, you are offered a number of templates in the columns block .. I chose two columns which are split one third and two thirds. There is then an option in the sidebar under blocks to adjust a column’s width using a slider. This works ok. However, once you have moved on to populate the column(s) with content, you are not able to readjust the width(s) if you have a change of mind.
I tried a couple of media & text blocks as you suggested, but they do not use the general margin setting that is used by the theme .. Independent Publisher 2 in my case.

I think that I have gone off using columns blocks, as they currently stand.
Thank you.

I see. When I set up some tests with the column block and then insert a paragraph block with in the columns I am no longer able to adjust the width of the columns. This is by design.
I will be happy to add a feature request for our team though. Are you also adding a paragraph block or a different block inside the columns?

My projected use of column block consisted of two columns .. one containing an image and the other a paragraph block. Having populated the two columns, I decided that the size of the image column needed to be changed .. but I was not able to do so.
